A wCDMA Nokia will work in Japan with a USIM.

Just bring your own SIM from home and pay the roaming fees or purchase a local Vodafone KK one from either the Nokia store at Narita or T-CAT or even from the larger Vodafone stores.

Yes, that "wCDMA Nokia" is his problem. His bleeding edge Nokia 7700 does not seem to support wCDMA.

From what I can tell from the specs, is it only a "Tri-Band Operation--- GSM 900/1800/1900" and not wCDMA. But hey, what do I know what "Tri-Band" really means?
Nokia Japan says that only, " The Nokia 6650 phone is compatible with both WCDMA and GSM networks, and users can take advantage of international roaming services that use either WCDMA or GSM 900/1800 networks."

The current bilingual models are: 6650, 7600, 6630, etc.

Tri-Band Operation
* GSM 900/1800/1900
* Automatic switching between bands
Data Transfer
* EDGE*
* GPRS* (multislot class 10)
* E-GPRS* (multislot class 4 (3+1))
* HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data)*
* Circuit-switched data
* TCP/IP*

WCDMA is a new third-generation mobile phone system in Japan which complies with international standards (i.e. Vodafone Global Standard). The Nokia 6650 phone is compatible with both WCDMA and GSM networks, and users can take advantage of international roaming services that use either WCDMA or GSM 900/1800 networks. Thus, the same phone can be used to make calls both in Japan and overseas.*

*Nokia 6650 phone compatible coverage areas for WCDMA and GSM 900/1800 networks are Japan, Europe, the Asia-Pacific region (except S. Korea), and Africa.

The current bilingual models are: 6650, 7600, 6630, etc.
