Chinese athletes to stay chilled in Athens
Tue 6 July, 2004 10:27

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Olympic team will aim to beat the heat at the Athens Games next month with the help of refrigerated jackets.

With temperatures expected to soar to 40 degrees Celsius in the Greek capital Chinese athletes, who in the past have benefited from turtle's blood and caterpillar fungus, will take advantage of the specially designed suits.

The garments, meant to be worn during warm-ups and breaks, contain a special gel that keeps cold after being chilled in a refrigerator or ice water, the China Daily newspaper said on Tuesday.

"What is more amazing is that the jackets are capable of temperature adjusting. If it is too cold, the jackets can warm an athlete after being heated in a microwave oven," the China Daily said.

Those fun-loving Moonies at UPI ripped off this "news" article from The Mail which actually is two years old. This story is getting to be a classic like square watermellons or maybe a Fark cliche.

Air-conditioned shirt offers heat relief
TOKYO, July 30 (UPI) --Japanese technician Hiroshi Ichigaya has invented what he calls the world's first air-conditioned shirt.
While most shirts trap an individual's sweat -- keeping it from evaporating -- Ichigaya's invention creates circulating air to enhance evaporation through the use of two small battery-operated fans, the Mail on Sunday said. All electrical parts of the shirt can be removed to allow for washing, and the shirt can even be powered by plugging it into a computer through a USB cord....more....

The shirt story is back:

News.com: Japanese enjoy 'air-conditioned' clothes
...The company has sold about 5500 of the garments since they went on sale three years ago...

Meh. Same old shirt.

I'm still waiting for a revival of the story about gas-powered heated jackets that premiered at the Nagano Winter Olympics.

I spotted one of these at Comiket today... Interesting... Wasn't sure if the guy was actually overweight... Looked very odd, but suprisingly cool.
