Extra RAM for a 12" powerbook G4 1.33mhz

Postby japslapper » Mon Aug 30, 2004 10:44 am

Several months back thanks to some fellow FGs on this forum, I took the plunge and bought a 12" G4 powerbook 1.33ghz. Bought in the UK with nice good discount for being an "educator" plus as an export no tax  .

It runs well - and yes as a lot of you folks said yup the bilingual (Japanese/Engrish) bit -fantastic! 8) . way better than my old P3 vaio

Now for extra RAM. I have been waiting till now - so I could get a feel for it before I splash out (getting to little is a waste if you wanna get more later etc and is getting to much) - just be waiting trying to get a judge of how much I need to benefit my needs - though I am not sure hence I am asking here.

Fellow FGs what RAM configuration works best - least problems etc? Whats recommended? typically its 100bucks for 256MB and 300bucks for 516MB - is it worth spending disproportionly for alot extra?

What do you fellow powerbook book users find?

Apple is a rip off - whats the best reliable(cheap) source here in Japan? Advice anyone? :?:

Thanx

I'm running a PB15" 1.25Ghz and 1GB RAM. I was lazy and stupid and bought the RAM from Apple Japan.

I'd say at least 768 at a minimum and ideally 1GB to be totally happy.

Here's the link to Kakaku.com computer memory:
http://kakaku.com/sku/pricemenu/memory.htm

Most of that is Windows so you gotta be sure you're buying the right part.

I'd probably end up going to the Laox Apple store in Akiba because I'm sure they'd have the appropriate RAM at a decent price.

OS X is a RAM hungry operating system. At the minimum throw in at least a half gig chip. If you can find a cheap source to max out the RAM, go for it. You are going thank yourself later for spending the extra cash.

Hmmm, being lazy that's what I used to do when I lived inside the Yamamote Line. Out here in the 'burbs of Tokyo-Yokohama, the best deal is at PC DEPOT since like Loax, they will "guarantee" that the RAM they sell you is correct. Of course, somebody might find a place 2,00yen cheaper, but a big store's money-back satisfaction commitment is worth any tiny difference in price.

Also note that PC sales-support folks in Japan often are very clever and not the drooling morons you expect to deal with in the West at Best-Buy, Office Max, et al. Many PC sales-support folks in Japan speak Geek] in a katakana dialect....it's amazing what you can get done just using error logs and screen shots without much Japanese skill, right Mr. Sparkle?

But can you sit in a Y40,000 Panasonic Massaji Chair and get two sessions a day with the smiling, happy housewife pushing all the right buttons for you at PC Depot fo' free? For FREE? Hell yeah, FO' FREE.

I think not...

LONG LIVE LAOX, land of the free massaji. Who needs Chinese massaji gyaru when ya gots access to the grand master massaji chair?

"Ni Ho MAAAU? Massaji?"

"Sorry baby, the Panny's got you beat - and cheaper to boot. Not unless YOU pay ME"

Hell yeah. You just have to know how to work it, baby.

Who needs 'da J?

Japan's way more fun when you can barely speak the language. It's like "Lost in Translation" because there ain't no subtitles.

Imagine how much funnier it was for me when Mulboyne dressed down the taxi man for not taking the ideal route to Golden Gai or when the Pongi DISSED the "Manaja" at Anna Millers for not sitting us in the non-smoking section (or was it the smoking section? Ah, I can't remember. )... when I had NO IDEA what they were sayin'.

BTW, That Anna Miller's uniform is VERRRRY distracting - especially when you are talking about the walking manga character, Azusa. YOWWWWWza. Stacked like IHOP.

Goddamn, that was worth the price of admission alone. 8O
