Radio Korea: KAIST Develops Humanoid Robot 'HUBO'
A humanoid robot has been developed in South Korea, that could prove the equal of the Japanese ASIMO robot, currently touted as the world's best. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology or KAIST announced Wednesday the birth of the humanoid robot named HUBO, the fruit of a year-long effort. HUBO is 125 centimeters tall, weighs 55 kilograms, recognizes individual voices, and has a perfect "vision" capability enabled by a pair of eyes that can move independently of each other. The robot, with its 41 joints, can perform smooth, nimble movements, dance or exchange handshakes with people.
The creator of the technological wonder, KAIST professor Oh Joon-ho, says that HUBO can walk up and down stairs just like its Japanese counterpart, adding that research will continue to equip the robot with running capabilities. The professor voiced confidence that Seoul would be able to catch up with the advanced level of other countries in robot technology.
