OK, I've been using Mnemosyne since july 1st and I'm up to 331 Kanji and I have the kana done.
I'm doing "all japanese all the time"'s method, so I'm just doing the kanji definitions right now.
Just wanted to know other people's stories for studying kanji and maybe what is average for pace.

I'm sure I would be going faster if I was going to school for learning japanese.

Thread is geared at beginners - intermediate

I'd recommend Anki (as does AJATT). Works on your home machine, your iPhone, Windows mobile device, and so on. Free and effective.

Could you also recommend a good bar that I could use this quiz game in?;)

Yep - of course I can!! :kanpai:

But you know it is better to drink in bars rather than study kanji otherwise people will point and laugh and call you a dweeb.

Anki won't work without it. But, it is a very good way to organize and review all the stuff you put a little elbow grease into. 8)

Be careful, there is a neurological theory called "state-bound memory" that believes memories stored while in a certain mental state can be best recalled while in the same mental state.
So if you study kanji while drinking, you may only be able to recall them while drunk. I tested the theory and believe it to be true, when I sobered up, I wasn't able to recall kanji I studied while drunk. But then, I didn't remember studying them either.

I wouldn't know. I've never been sober....

Hey there , yeah that AJATT isn't a bad site at all , I find Anki a little slow for me though when it comes to learning the meanings of the individual Kanji.
For learning the meanings of the Kanji I use a game called Slime Forest with Heisig's "Remembering the kanji", I've been doing about 80 a day and am up to 1,511 ,practicing by playing Japanese games on my PSP and reading Manga in Japanese.
I find it too easy to cheat with Anki , I much prefer to be told "No thats bloody wrong !" and get bombarded with the same kanji until I get it right :P Another handy trick is to switch your OS to the Japanese language mode (only handy if you work with computers regularly I suppose.).
Well thats my 2 cents , best of luck with the studies man :D

Just a little update, I am up to 1600 kanji and that is doing 1000 reps a day for the past 70 day. I should be done with the kanji sometime next month I think.

Some people do the kanji in 2 months but I don't see the point in doing it that fast. Your recall time would be really low along with the memorization of the kanji.

I do 300 sit-ups at the gym three time a week, but I don't see the point in doing it as I supplement those reps with a healthy dose of tonkatsu.

Akira117, that's impressive. I am very curious though... I am sure your kanji recognition is coming along quite well, but can you read sentences?

I haven't started on sentences yet, once I get to the 2,000 kanji mark (about) I will start learning the sentence structure and adding full Japanese sentences to anki (about 10,000 will be memorized). Also somewhere in that last part 1000 more kanji are learned. The key part of sounding fluent is exposing yourself to all types of Japanese media (pretty easy for some people living in japan) and I have tried to average about 3 hours a day of Japanese media (my OS, phone, home pages and all of the TV shows I watch are in Japanese).

I would say I am 40% progressed to a more advanced level, but obviously you are never done learning language and you can always improve on it.
