Advice from you 'Media savvy' types

Postby Socratesabroad » Fri Dec 03, 2004 2:06 pm

Apologies as this is not Japan-related, but this is Asia and study abroad-related. I thought the media gurus around here might give me some advice since I admittedly know nothing about the media field...

My Chinese tutor has a daughter who plans to study abroad in England for 2 years as the final part of her degree in media - she's a freshman now and chafing a bit at Chinese society and the level of education she's currently receiving (apparently some instructors don't even show up, the Chinese teacher of English speaks poor Chinese, etc.). She now has 3 unis to pick from and I was hoping for any impressions, opinions, etc. as to these schools' location, reputation, etc.

The schools are:
University of Central England
University College Worcester
Bournemouth University

She (the daughter) has moderate-level English ability but a definite interest in getting away from China for a bit. And she's quite keen on going into some form of media like journalism or advertising.

So if you have any thoughts on these schools or would like to suggest others, I'm all ears...

Hey, I ain't no Limey. Whadda I know 'bout University of Central England, University College Worcester, or Bournemouth University?
All I know was that in linguistics and anthro, it was better for me at the slum-environment surrounding University of Manchester than the cushy life at Oxford. I was really wasn't welcome anywhere in the UK doing my dog-and-pony show lectures on Native American linguistcs/ESL till I visited University of Edinburgh.

Avoid Bournemouth University. The whole place is where old folks go in transit to the Great Gig in the Sky! Or perhaps, a never ending Frank Sinatra concert. One of them has just got to be hell! 8) 8)

I've personally taken a shine to some of the older stuff recently thanks in part to more retro stuff like Robbie Williams' Swing When You're Winning, so I'll just let the Sinatra remark slide...

But cheers for the info on Bournemouth - you've confirmed what I heard from someone else about the place being a retirement village. As I said, I'm not the one going, but I would like to help out given all the things my poor tutor has to put up with.

Cheers bongo.
