If you want data, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria site is quite good -

The median house price in Melbourne is currently $485,000.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I know where you're coming from...I grew up in the Melbourne suburbs and was staggered when I went back home and saw how expensive EVERYTHING was. Groceries are generally a tiny bit cheaper in Japan, but when I first came to Tokyo, they were only 1/4 to 1/3 of the price (admittedly, that was a very long time ago).
Oz is going through one hell of a bubble and seems poised for a horrible, thudding crash.
