Japanese phrasebook recommendations

Postby Fallin' up » Thu Jun 15, 2006 11:28 am

Hi all

I'm currently using two textbooks to study, Japanese for busy people and Japanese in mangaland but Im in dire need of a good phrasebook. What Im looking for is a phrasebook that doesnt only teach the formal/polite way of saying things. In my case, 99% of the time a casual expression will suffice.

For example: "See you later/See you next time" - I want a book that has both mata kondo aoi shimasho AND mata ne.

recommendations?

thanks :)

Apparently my point was too subtle for you.

Phrasebooks are totally useless. Study your textbook.

Note: "Japanese in Mangaland" is not a textbook.

you forgot to toss an "IMHO" somewhere in there. As I've already stated, I
would find a good phrasebook to very usefull at this point. So I'll go ahead and ask again...can you recommend any? Or perhaps your just having too much fun playing father knows best?

phrase book

This 'textbook' of mine teaches very casual expression that I think it suits your needs. Example:1) Let's see each other again- Mata Ao. 2)I am glad we met- Aete Yokatta! 3) Can you see me tomorrow?- Ashita aeru? 4)If I hadn't taken that train, we wouldn't have met- Ano densha-ni noranakattara, bokutachi awanakatta (for male)/ watashitachi awanakatta (for female). 5) Do you believe in destiny?- Unmei-tte shinjiru?....

Avoid that one, too...

There's a widely available red and white one I used to complement my text book. I think it's very handy for situations like going to the bank, getting your haircut, etc.

Tangotown Has a HUGE phrase book as well as pre-translated phrases that you can email directly from your phone in both formal and non-formal situations.

There are no errors.. I made it myself.. :)
