Yomo Yomo Language Site

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Jul 02, 2007 4:32 pm

A new multilingual language site called Yomo Yomo has just launched today to help Japanese learners.

You can input a Japanese site URL or paste in some text and the site will express it in hiragana, romaji, hangul, hindi or cyrillic script. The link uses Yahoo News as an example.

It's not a translation tool, it's designed to help you read and pronounce Japanese.

It seems to be designed to fill my screen with gibberish.

This is a classic of bad design, it's totally useless. The main page is Shift JIS but there isn't any Japanese text at all, it's all done as graphics. The content all appears inside a frame, and the subframe is set to UTF-8. Unfortunately, there is no way to set the encoding for a frame separate from the enclosing window. Thus, the whole system is useless. You can open the framed page in a new window, but changing the encoding will cause the page to refresh in a new framed window with the same problem.

Back to the drawing board...
