Is this ethically correct?

I've been asked to read and correct a document written in English by a Japanese post graduate student.
The document is her post grad thesis.
She's planning to publish it and has also asked me to write (not correct) a cover letter to go with it.
I don't mind helping someone out, but ...........................?

Correcting it should be OK, especially if she mentions that she got help. But writing the cover letter sounds a bit on the road to plagiarism, unless she clearly indicates she didn't write it.

You could still help her with proofreading and editing, though. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Yeah, I have to agree. Proofing and correcting is fine (and I think pretty normal, but I could be wrong). Writing a cover letter for it is a bit of a stretch.

As for the age difference, I don't see any problem with that! She's legal, right?

I've made corrections to her doc and asked her to compose the cover letter herself and add, "bla...... bla..... bla......I invoke your good judgement in considering my request.......bla....bla....bla...." at the end.

Is this a thesis for a Japanese school? In the US I actually used to do this exact thing for foreign grad students as an undergrad, and it was sponsored by the school...so I'm assuming it's ethically correct, at least in the US. I agree about the cover letter part though, you may want her to take a crack at it before diving in.

Doesn't bother me a bit. Everybody is young enough to be my grandaughter and a lot of 'em may actually be. You correct her work and I'll do her. Will that solve any ethical problems for you?
