Shizuoka International Translation Competition 2003-2004
Headed by Dr. Donald Keene and prominent poet Makoto Ooka, endorsed by the governor of Shizuoka Pref and sponsored by the prefecture board of education, this competition for translation of Japanese fiction and nonfiction into English, Russian, German, French, Korean, and Chinese, has been highly successful.

Last year, 136 contestants submitted their English translation of various Japanese writings, as well as 357 contestants for their Korean translations. The top award for English translation went to Kenneth Bryson, a 54 year old American, who translated passages from a novel by Kiyoko Murata and lietrary criticism by Saiichi Marutani. Mr. Bryson grew up in Japan as a boy but never studied in Japan fields. Another top award went to Kim Myong Soong (sp?), a young woman who also translated Murata and Marutani into Korean (she did not mention her background in her aisatsu).

The awards include cash prizes of one million yen for each winner and scholarships to study in Japan for a year.
