Help at Scholarships

Postby Bedi » Thu Dec 30, 2004 1:06 am

Does anyone know about the chance to get a scholarship in Japan (even a 20.000yen / month one will work out) for a 19 years old high school graduater. (My Japanese skill is only near to JLPT level 3 yet and I came here to study Japanese at an intensive course, but well.. everything is kinda expensive you know. So a little help would be fine (I will go out to look for a part time job of course, however I need every yen I could get).
Is there a chance to get any scholarship if you aren't a university student or already graduated from some? All scholarships I found are for people either being and university student or inted to enter some university in japan or being from Asia (especially Indonesia) / South America.
If someone could give me some serious tips I would be very thankful.
If languages matter, I speak German, Turkish, some English, some Esperanto and some Japanese as mentioned above.

Note: I searched for scholarships before I post this. Got a plenty of threads which contain the word 'scholarship' but none I read was a help yet. Hope I didn't oversee some topic alike.

Did you try JASSO?
http://www.jasso.go.jp/ryugaku_e.html
You can order their catalogue where all the present scholarships provided by any Japanese organization are listed whith their conditions. All of them are given to non-japanese students and rank from 50.000 yen /month to 200.000 yen/month. If you order the catalogue you should order the Japanese and English version. The applications for Japanese funded scholarships are Japanese only.

If you do not intend to enter a Japanese university to study Japanese your chances are near to zero. All the programs are running at least one year. So if you change your plans to study Japanese at a University the chance might be much better. You have to hurry with your decision because the dead line is usually in early January. I would give it a try.

I'm intending to stay here at least one year.
Well about the universities... I think it's simply to expensive going to university here. There are so many fees to pay while taking the entrance test and so on. If all my work will rely on scholarships this is kinda too risky. Just imagine I enter some university and my scholarship gets canceled for any reason, that would mean that I have to stop in the middle of studies and return home ?
Thanks for your information so far! Guess I'll have have a look at these.

good luck, bedi! I came here as you did and it took me about one year to enter my present university. I didn't regret it so far, the university watches for their western students at least financially quite good and there are a lot of scholarships you can apply for through your university only. There's also a very good chance to get them reduce your study fees if you are not supported otherwise or only with a very low scholarship up to 80.000 yen.
I hope you'll find a way that is not too exhausting! all power for you! :ninja4:
