WTB - recommendations - Cube PC

Postby Steve Bildermann » Tue Dec 28, 2004 11:12 am

As I do my end of the year Osogi (as all good FG should) I find I am up to my ass in spare but unrelated computer parts. HDDs / DVD drives / memory etc.

Can somebody recommend a Barebones *very small* *very quiet* Cube type PC I could get to put these parts into and built me a backup system.

Hurry cos the urge to do this is upon me now and if I start watching Japanese New Year TV I will be too stupefied to do anything but gurgle and layback under the kotatsu.

Thanks

Hmm, a cross between isogi and oosouji? High speed cleaning!

Anyway...

Sure. It would help a lot to know what you have that you want to use though. Is that SDRAM? DDR? RDRAM? And what speed is it? Do you have a CPU you want to make use of?

If you're hoping to use a small motherboard you have around then a cube won't be for you -- they use custom boards that come with the machines. Cubes are also a bit pricey -- you pay extra for the funky design.

If you just want a small case with a power supply that won't cost a lot of $$$ and accepts standard components, I would suggest you look at AOpen stuff. Good quality, very cheap. They have a range of micro-atx desktops and minitowers. AOpen power supplies (included with the cases) are also good. Generally quiet too.

I'm a turbo kinda guy :D

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

In reply.

Small PC is better than cube then - ok.
I expect I'll use AMD.
I'll check the links and look at AOopen today.

I appreciate the advice.

That made me laugh, which then gave me a coughing fit (am sick), which I guess I deserved for poking pedantic fun at you!

You can find info about the AOpen cases here if you like: http://aopen.jp/products/housing/.

The slim ones are the smallest, but keep in mind that they will not accept full-height PCI/AGP cards, you have to use low-profile ones. Not likely that your spare parts will be low profile. For a small but not low-profile case the 450 series might suit well.

I've built a lot of machines with AOpen cases. I've always found them to be well made and priced reasonably.

If you do decide to go with another case, make sure it has a decent brand power supply in it and that the inner edges of the case are folded over, not sharp bare metal edges that will slice&dice your hand.

What components do you already have that you hope to make use of?
