Orix has always been good (except in baseball); however, it may depend on how many people and from where to where. Can you enlighten us some more.

I have used Orix tretal trucks to haul furniture around in Tokyo and have always had good and reasonably cheap service from them.

I've used Toyota twice. No problems. Not too expensive. Outlets all over Tokyo:

Give them a call!

Six people return Tokyo to Sado Island - but perhaps we will leave the car on the mainland if the ferry over is too expensive.

looking at pick-up on Thursday 18th in the afternoon, driving all night to Niigata for the early morning ferry to Sado.

Leave Sado on Monday morning 22nd August and wander back to Tokyo.

Just trying to figure out if for 6 people with camping equipment it would be better to drive ourselves rather than take the overnight train from Ueno.

So have to factor in the high cost of the "Freeway" tolls (I love the irony) and petrol etc split with 6 people.

Convenience factor for all the camping gear is a consideration as well.

Update - hired from Nissen Rentals at Takadanobaba (behind Big Box). It was really easy and the people there were great.

Paid about \10,000 per day for a van that was not flash but did the job perfectly and transported all of us and our camping gear to Sado Island.

Had a fantastic time watching the Kodo Taiko drummers and hanging out at the beach.
