Where do you buy sheets of glass in here ?

Postby Coligny » Mon Mar 15, 2010 6:13 pm

I can't easily find places that would sell and cut sheets of glass for furniture/windows. ( i need me quite a lot of display shelves for me minicars collections... everything on sale is too deep, not wide enough and 'oh sh1t' expensive...)

My local hardware stores don't carry any of this.

Somebuddy got any clue ?

Yeah, you won't find glass at the hardware store.

I have had to do this in the past, and ended up locating my friendly local "garasu-ya san," who happily cut sheets to my specifications. It wasn't expensive either.

So just ask around for the nearest garasu-ya. There's at least one in just about every community, because windows get busted and need to be replaced all the time.

In fact, your local hardware store might be able to tell you where to go (in a nice way, of course).

I already have some diamond powder coated cutting wheels...

But you missed the part where I was wondering where to get the glass... maybe a spare nuke and a sandy beach...

Will hunt for a gurasu-ya... might not be that difficult (i even found a powder coating shop the other day... run by an couple that have to be carbon 14 dated to know their ages...)

I've bought glass sheets before - cut to size, which I used for a shop display.

It was quite cheap and they delivered.

I bought it from a small factory which specializes in glass. I'm certain there are simular places everywhere.

Like nottu said, glass is quite easy to cut, the only problem that you may run into is the sharp edges and beveling of the edges which normally a glass shop will do for you.

If you're going to lay down a glass sheet of more than 50cm length only supported by the edges and put more than 2kgs of weight on it, I would go for the double-thick tempered glass....

On a side note, when I was in the China office I wanted a glass table but nobody sold one so one of my colleagues suggested a welder who would come by to make the frame, and I could go and pick up the glass at a local glass factory. I went over there, told them the size I wanted, 2.5m x 1m , they suggested a 12mm "shatterproof" and nicely beveled edges for the grand total of....900 yen. The sheet weighed 70kg at least, was a bitch to get into the office but I did have a nice glass table....

How did you get on? I want to buy some quite thick glass to make a table top out of. So if you had no luck, I'll go check out some local stores soon.
