Antique stuffs...

Postby GomiGirl » Sun Oct 07, 2012 12:33 am

Long story, but I have in my possession some old pictures copyrighted 1905 that fit into a 3D viewer thing - Stereoscopy. These stereoscopic cards are all depictions of Japan, Japanese soldiers etc. But the writing on them are all in English.

How can I find out if these are collectables and if anybody is interested in collecting them from me... :biggrin2:

Anybody know anything about antiques here?

In addition, are there any antique markets or similar that are around. FIL is visiting next week and he is right into this stuff. Would like to try and show him something here that he will find interesting.

I'd check ebay and yahoo auctions to see if there was anything similar and you could see what they are going for to. I know a bit about antiques but not that item, sorry I can't help more.

You might look here: http://www.old-japan.co.uk/index.asp

Old Japan is UK-based and was established in 1982. Since that time, we have been buying and selling 19th Century photographs of Japan (inc. Meiji & Bakumatsu era), China and Korea. Our customers are national and local museums all over the world, as well as photographic dealers and private collectors. Our stock of Japanese photography in particular, is probably the largest on the Web, and we are always interested in buying additional collections, albums, or single images.

We offer a full Buyers’ Satisfaction Guarantee: if you’re not happy with your purchase, just return it to us within 14 days, and we’ll refund your payment in full... no questions asked.

Thanks Buky - I have dropped them a line.

Did anybody know of any shops around Tokyo that I can take the Father-in-law to? He likes to poke around "junk", second hand type shops.

When I lived in Yokohama I found a few antique stores, but they mostly carry high-end stuff, as opposed to affordable rusty, junky type knick knacks.
There seems to be quite a few stores in Setagaya-ku, Antiques Westwood for example (mostly furniture, not cheap).

I've seen a few antique shops in Kamakura and Jiyugaoka as well, but again, more boutique type (high cost of rent I guess). The site below has a lot of shops listed, some include ジャンク (junk) in the descriptions, so some some deals may be found.

"The Tour of Antique shopes" site has a long list of antique shops in the Tokyo and Yokohama areas (the first three are in Okinawa though).
