Electricity costs

Postby akatsuka » Fri Jun 20, 2008 7:07 pm

Hi I'm moving to tokyo soon (yes, the visa is on its way... yay!) and have found a convenient room for rental. However, they say they charge electricity at 40yen per k/w.

Having absolutely no idea whether this is expensive, usual or cheap, i thought I'd ask you guys.... any idea? How much is your electricity bill each month? (approx... i know it depends how much you use and your lifestyle etc, but just to get an idea of costs.)

thanks

My 72 sq meters (775 sq ft) condo averages about 5-6,000yen/month. However, electricity jumps to 8-10,000yen/m during the peak of summer (6-8 weeks) and the dead of winter (6-8 weeks).YMMV

See this FG Thread mentioning Utility Costs.

The highest delivered electricity rates in the United States are about $.20/kWh so that's about double. That may be close to normal for Japan, and might explain why solar PV no longer needs subsidies.

Biggest users are your fridge, AC/electric heater, plasma TV, clothes dryer.

Mine runs from 3000 yen/mo (when there's no need for AC) to about 5000/mo, when the ACs cranking and I'm performing electroshock therapy on myself....I get bored easily.

thanks for the info. I got this info from a friend to:

Last March, they charged me Y5,273/319kWh (Daytime Y3,224/150kWh + Nighttime Y2,066/176kWh).

Thats around 20yen per kWh... So 40yen is double...??

The rent is pretty cheap 41-51,000 a month including all other bills except electricity. Its conveniently located too, so seriously thinking about renting it.

After all, I'll be at work all day and the only electrical appliances in my room are aircon, fridge, light and computer. Only the fridge will be on all day, everything else is off. I'm a student in London getting paid peanuts and having to pay for over-priced goods... I don't do luxury - even with aircon, believe me I can survive. I did before. Its not ideal, but I can shower for free ;)

In England, its pretty common to see people charging their phones while at work. I guess thats not the case for japan, huh? Is it possible to check email etc on a work computer after/during(?) work hours (providing you don't spend all day on it etc)

Thanks :)

Obviously, email will depend upon what your work server will permit. Some offices have you firewall'ed out of everything. Others will let you do hardcore porn like FG on any machine in the office. However, you don't want to be doing that the first minute of the first day. Learn the lay of the land before you start abusing the system (like everybody else).

Nobody will usually say anything about plugging in your own charger at your own work station, or position, but most places do not like, or even allow personal calls to be made, or taken in the office. Most of my people leave their phones off, or on "manner mode" and will briefly step out of the office to check, or take personal messages.

A little common sense goes a long way.

rates

Postby james » Sun Jun 22, 2008 4:36 pm

out here in the boonies, the cost has been a consistent 23 yen / kWh for at least the last 10 years. most electrical providers now have a plan though where you can slurp electrons at 7 yen / kWh between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
