I have my masters, now I need a job

Postby Oradea » Wed Sep 28, 2005 12:42 am

I have a masters in Modern History. I've been working in Japan for 5 years, 2 as an "Engrish teacher", and the last three as a "personnel manager". Now I can speak some of the lingo(Although nowhere near as much as I should after 5 years) I wanna find a uni job, and get out of this fucked up job I have. Only thing is, I have no idea the best way to go about it. Last year I sent my resume to 6 different unis in my area, ofcourse, I waited by the phone for three weeks, before my friend convinced me to go out for some nourishment.............

Any advice, muchly appreciated.

I hate to sound like a dick, but isn't that a MRS degree?
Isn't the question really what you can contribute to a company or institution with what you know and what you can do? Or else, you'll be stuck as an Engrish teacher picking up J-girls at gaspanic. Uni professors require at least a doctorate. That's the same both in the US and here.

Actually it depends a lot on connections and the institution. I personally know a guy with only a masters who has tenure at a university in Kyoto. He teaches English there, but he gets paid well and has a guaranteed job with annual raises for life. He also gets massive amounts of time off (measured in months per year, not weeks or days) and perks such as sabbaticals. It would drive me nuts I think (not much mental stimulation) but he seems to be happy. And who can argue with the time off?

As for getting a position outside of the English department though, that is a helluva lot harder. I'd even go as far as to say impossible unless the foreign prof has something specific that the uni in question wants -- someone who has already made a name for themselves in their field.

You need "something" published in print related to your field or a related scholarly endeveavor to get a university job. Even the Journal of Applied Tattoo History is ok.
No scholarly publications---No J-job. Period.

Also note, public universities as a matter of public policy have been ordered to reduce their numbers gaijin instructors for the past 10 years. Many fired gaijin instructors are looking for a new position. How many gaijin historians are teaching history in Japan? Two?
