Teiki - who pays?

Postby Caustic Saint » Mon Nov 14, 2005 12:29 pm

I've heard it said as one of the things "everybody knows" and "it's the law," but does anybody have an actual reference for something requiring employers to pick up transportation expenses?

I moved recently and am now commuting to work by train/bus instead of just walking. I started the commute this month, so the "who pays for it?" issue will come into play when I get paid in December. I don't think my boss is going to try to screw me over, but in case he has issues with paying the expenses (if he is indeed required to), I'd like some documented ammo to back up my postion.

Anybody have the full (real deal) details on this?

I'm no union fan, but this sort of thing sounds like a question for the General Union: http://www.generalunion.org/ I've never spoken to them but I think they will answer a short question like this even if you are not a member.

As a non-fact-based note though... As even the stingiest of employers during the worst of economic times seem to pay transport, I would guess there is a rule embedded somewhere.

My company pays for my teiki even though I drive to work. Weird. I told them they don't need to pay it, but they said they will anyway.

Actually, I used to report the MOST expensive route and got the cheapest and fastest route instead to make a couple 10,000 yens every 6 months. It was a big company and they never bother with that stuff even when they know.

There is a way to beat the system if you are a student, or better yet if you KNOW a studen and ask him or her to get the reduced fair. I don't recommend paying for tickets every time or SUICA/Passnet route because it will add up to a monstrous expense at the end. Besides, you can miss your train if you have to buy tickets every time. The company I was with never checked for that shit but there were so many douche bags that didn't buy teikis thinking that the teiki allowance was like for personal spending money... idiots. :shake:

When I worked for NOVA, they payed my bus fare up the road.

It was about 700 yen round trip, but I usually walked the 20 minutes either way.
