Questing regarding work for spouse.

Postby Christoff » Wed Mar 28, 2012 1:24 am

So, if a person gets a job in Japan form over seas, say the finance industry. Is their spouse able to work in japan too or do they also need to get a separate employment sponsorship?

The finance industry? What the hell does "questing" mean?

If someone doesn't know that answer or can't use "The Google" to find the answer, how could they possibly have a job other than washing dishes or collecting aluminum cans?

Oh, wait. Maybe I'm wrong. You could be Ben Bernanke.

I'm not up on current Immigration Law, but it used to be that if one person had a long-term (ie., non-tourist/culture, etc.) visa, the partner (must be married) could be eligible for a dependent spouse visa (they will not be able to legally work under this visa, though).

The Immigration Law has changed recently, though, so I have no idea how accurate this is.

You can work with a spouse or dependent visa, but only for 25 (28?) hours a week, and you have to ask the immigration nicely before, showing them a nice resume and job promise. Expect some teeth-sucking.

This is the correct answer.. ding ding ding we have a winner. The correct number of hours is 20 however. This is the same golden number for working on a student visa as well.

The common issue is that people just think you can work for the 20 hours a week without letting immigration know. You really do need to let them know first just to be sure.

This has bitten a friend in the butt who is trying to get PR now - seems she didn't do this and worked and put in her tax returns every year but has been advised to stay under the radar and not apply for PR for about 3 more years.

Personally, I think she needs a second opinion but she is too nervous to try as the lawyer was suggesting she may be deported if she gets an immigration inspector on his rags when reviewing the PR application.

Well, that is actually the reason why I am a regular here. Too many intellectual challenges at my work already. ;)
