I Want To be A FG, Too!!

Postby moogen » Wed Oct 15, 2003 4:19 pm

Hey Folks,
I need to figure out a way to become a FG, and you all know more than ANYONE on how to become one :D I'm half-J, and have moderate speaking skills (lived there with my uncle when I was 14 for a year), forgot how to read most kanji, but reeeally want to go back. I've been reading many websites on what to do, what to expect, what I need, etc. I am GOING to go. Kinda would like a job to go along with it, though... :) Probably the only job I may be able to get is teaching English. So here's my problem... I took 3 years of college, and hated what I was studying. Quit, went to work in telecom tech support for the past 4 years, never had the chance to finish. Was affected by a layoff a week ago. NOW, I have ample free time, and enough pay still coming in to truly search for a job there. BUT, I don't have a college degree... a big no-no for working in Japan. Soooo... A) is there a way around this? B) Is there a company that would not care if I did? C) If I straight up lied, would the companies actually find out? What do you all think? My family in Japan states they will assist in any way possible. Whadya think???

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-it. Ya got it made since you can get a "Repatriation" Visa for having Japanese family here. Fewer housing problems/less money worries/support of loving family/less hostile government interactions/fewer stares. Dang, made-in-the-shade FG like you make me whine like a Boeing 777.

Since you will have a REAL visa that lets you work at ANY job, many companies won't be checking your degree carefully (a "replacement" degree will work). You might be able to find tech work here since nobody really looks at your degree AS LONG AS you can actually do the IT work.

If you weren't getting a "repatriation" visa, you would be beating your head against the wall trying to find work without a degree.

Ok. I've said the positive things. The negative is: "How much do you like concete?"

lol you have taken a HUGE load off my mind... all i've read about is the difficulty of getting a work visa without a degree. never even heard of the "Repatriation Visa..." how does one go about getting one? No traveling to Japan, then having to leave the country, I hope? I'll be sure to check the Japanese Embassy webpage, too.
I was spoon fed concrete from birth. I can't get enuf of the stuff

Everything you wanted to know about Japanese visas:

http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/index.html

Go straight to that website and get the info straight from the horse's mouth (i.e., the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). What Taro refers to as a "Repatriation Visa" is actually a visa intended for spouses or children of Japanese nationals. Whether or not you qualify is a good question.

I'm being a little sarcastic here since the chicken-shite visa given to Fujimori and thousands of other Latinos is better than my 3-year "pet visa" for a spouse (divorce is grounds for deportation but "blood" are not allowed disown their kin). As a practical matter, their are plenty of Latin American's of Japanese "blood" here who simply changed their name to get a visa.

Thanks for that link there kamome! Well, my mom is now an american citizen (she's lived here for over 35 years now), who do ya think I should use for a sponsor? All I have are uncles, aunts, and cousins, do you all think that would be close enough to get me by?? What's the best way of going about "Let's Japan Visa??"

It sure is chicken-shite. The J's cast the safety net far and wide when it comes to "their own" (and what a weird definition of "their own" it is!), but don't give a rat's ass for those who can't claim some kind of blood tie. More evidence: the N. Korean children of the Japanese abductees. They are every bit Korean as you can get, but the Japanese claim them as their own.

Anyway, if Fujimori can get a visa, moogen probably could still get a visa too.

Call the J-embassy and tell them you wanna do a one or two year homestay with your uncle to learn the language and your "roots'. They'll give ya the welcome-back-to-the-Fold visa, go to Japan, say hello to your uncle, and leave to look for a real job ... most likely in Tokyo.

How about the "black sheep" visa for those who abandoned the motherland and now are coming back?

btw, i'm preparing myself for the big trip to J-land... you know, getting all my finances in order, taking teaching ESL class, eating 3 buckets of concrete a day... the usual stuff :D but i guess i kinda need a job, too... i hear those are nice. i have an interview with GEOS at the end of the month, but after aaaall the stuff i've heard online, i'm a-gonna try to avoid the big 3. with my new found "i-really, REALLY-wanna-be-a-FG Visa (tm)," i'm going to try and find a job with the help of my uncle and a few cousins. i've been looking up information on some of the smaller J-land based eikaiwa's, and have found a few that are supposed to be real nice-like. what are some of the better eikaiwa's i should go for outside of the big 3? how about the one's that i should avoid like the plague (or Japanese milk)?? as always, your opinions are greatly appreciated
