Jenkins-san makes more money than you: $3,200

Jenkins gets monthly salary of $3,200 as plea bargaining process begins

Monday, September 13, 2004 at 14:20 JST
TOKYO — A U.S. Army spokesman said Sunday that accused deserter Charles Robert Jenkins is entitled to get paid about $3,200 per month as a soldier based on the length of service before his alleged desertion. The amount of his past service totaled nine years and two months, the U.S. Army said.

After Jenkins turned himself in at Camp Zama on Saturday morning, Zama officials outfitted him in an Army Class B uniform, had him sign the standard paperwork and gave him an advance payment that's offered to soldiers in need of financial assistance.

Legal procedures to determine his fate are already under way, the U.S. Army in Japan said Monday. Maj John Amberg, the camp's chief spokesman, said the 64-year-old sergeant continued procedures Monday to return to active duty for the first time since the alleged desertion to North Korea in 1965.

Jenkins is staying at a temporary accommodation in the camp in Kanawaga Prefecture together with repatriated Japanese abductee Hitomi Soga, whom he met and married in North Korea, and their two North Korean-born daughters.

Jenkins will fully start jobs relating to personnel in the camp's administrative support unit after completing the procedures for registration, said Amberg, who serves as the public affairs chief of the camp.

On Saturday, Jenkins completed an emergency contact form and was offered enrollment in the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance program. Identification cards were issued to him, his wife and their youngest daughter.

Jenkins is not under arrest and can act freely at Camp Zama as long as he is accompanied by aides appointed by the U.S. Army, Amberg said.

But he cannot leave the camp without the commander's permission, the army said. (Wire reports)

Not bad for a high school drop-out.

Jenkins paid $3200/month

Not bad for a high school drop out. He's getting paid more than the
typical early career US/UK college teacher/researcher with a PhD.

And US military benefits (housing, medical, etc.) are better than anything
that is typical of US/UK colleges.

He's gonna be RICH! No other american has the inside story on NK like he does.

Your a little harsh on him arent you Taro!?
Are you ex-military? got a thing against deserters?

I guess it may be justified tho... cause he will do exactly what he did against the united states but this time for the united states. Hmmnn

The money won't be in the American angle; the movie will be for the Japanese. Koizumi padded his election totals with this "feel good" story. There's gotta be a movie in there somewhere.

I doubt anyone in the States cares much about Jenkins, well outside of the US military. One thing I thought was funny was the camera close-ups on the money Jenkins was being given when he turned himself in.

"Dumb mistake?" The man's a deserter and deserves every last ounce of shit that gets heaped upon his decrepit ass. He made his decision back then, and he gets to deal with the fallout now.

I think the point that is being made here is that "NO SHIT" whatsoever is being or will ever be dumped on him! The shit is, taxpayers here in Japan including taxes paid by foreign residents are supporting his luxurious lifestyle!
All this for a deserter while the US soldiers who get some sense and decide not to go back to Bush's illicit war in Iraq for a second term are thrown into jail!
The road to the abyss.

Not to mention the prime time coverage he gets every night. I am tired of this guy and his mugshot on TV all the time. WTF is wrong here? Why can't they treat him like he would be treated anywhere else?

I don't care if it's 250,000 yen or 250 yen, the man doesn't deserve a penny of my, nor any sane working person's money. Fuck respect for the elderly-the man's a criminal and thats that.

And by the way Skank-don't use "2 b" and stuff like that. You sound like a twelve-year old girl.

I think you guys are being to hard on him.
He was sick of the hypocrisy and American cruelty and insensitiveness (prevalent here too - American Oyaji)
and he jumped ship.

No matter what you say... he will be rackin in the dough
and his daughters will be semi-stars/authorities on NK

When he was there he was teaching English. Most online attacks are from NK these days. So I think he may have been teaching these NK government hackers. So maybe he does know how to use a computer - somewhat.

he has done whats right...he came back to face the charges...why...cuz of his family...cant u see that...? I think that his family deserve to be secured...he was man enough to raise his family, keep them off drugs, out of gangs and alive...yeah so he fucked up when he was young...what did it cost him...ah his life..basically..imagine what he gave up to live in NK for such a long time...!!! im sure there wasnt a day that went by when he thought to himself "what the fuck did i do..?"...then he met a girl, had a family and it was time for him to be a father, be around for his kids, and his wife...and give them a shot at a future...now the kids are grown up, safe and secure its time for him to make the past right...
