You can't even tell most clients "No, I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks." without them expunging your name from the digital Rolodex in their cranial CPU. Too many translators....must find a way to reduce their numbers, like I did with NOVA....I do better in Roppongi now that many of them are gone...nefarious indeed.

That's how I picked up most of my clients. I went fishing for new clients during all the major holidays when the other "lazy" translators were on vacation. They give me the job because their regular guy isn't available and then end up sticking with me because it's less trouble (and often better quality) than trying to make work around the other guy's schedule.

And all it costs me is any semblance what so ever of a social life... :p

My first year freelance, I literally went the entire year without a single full 24 hour period in which I didn't work at least an hour...

Then I should checkout Roppongi again. Haven't been there in a long time. :-)
