When the doctors here see my surgery scars they call a fuckin conference...... the topic is usually about how clean my scars are and how well my reconstructive surgery worked. They are totally in awe. It scares me. In most cases I demand what drugs I want and threaten to take my business to another clinic and then get what ever drugs I want. "My Dr back home have me........ and it worked!" !!!!! The mediacal professionals here know that they are light years behind the US, if you can prove that you know that, you get top treatment.

No doubt treatment in the US is way better if you have good insurance. But just ask Taro what his chances if getting decent medical attention would be if he moved back to the US.

BTW, does anyone in Japan do real physical therapy? So far what I've experienced is absolute crap.

Yeah, as a handicapped person in the States, if I work (use use non-Medicaid insurance), almost all my health insurance claims are denied under the "pre-existing conditions" exclusionary clause. In addition, if I want to be self-employed (or work in small company), my monthly premium starts at $1,700/month.
Basically, I must live in exile in some nation with national heath insurance.

Yeah, Japanese physical therapy is a joke (unless you can find a teaching university hospital that happens to specialize in physical therapy).

I went to Kawatetu Hospital in Chiba that has a 'sport rehabilitation' department. I have never had therapy(mental or physical) back home, but for Chiba it's supposed to be good. Apparently pro athletes go there and they provide medical care for the Lotte Marines.

Yup, sport clinic are the best for this kind of treatment (like everywhere in fact).

Now for free healtcare. 3 month in France give you access to the "carte vitale" (healtcare registration). No income give you access to the fully state paid healthcare. (pre existing conditions don't exist for the state program). Unlike the big headlines of these days, french hospitals are not slaughterhouses.

For japanese medicine... That's the result of a system were doctors buy their diplomas. Sometimes, you find one who like his job (my current dentist is one of them, even if the guy's age have to be found by analysing his level of carbon 14). But usually, it's just about "I haz a diploma, I are smart, bow before me".

To have good healthcare, the best is to befriend with a couple of doctors (manage to teach english to the bored housewife) who can recommend you good doctors in field where they don't work (read, don't befriend ob/gyn if you are searching for an ob/gyn, also aim for university hospital people, they know the whole playfield in the region and they are exposed to much more case/internationnal methodology)

I can quite understand why non-native English speaking FG work in certain industries (Iranians in construction, filipinos in bars, Brazilians in factories etc). All the power to them.
But I can not for the life of me understand why ANYONE would think that the advice posted at the start of this thread (i.e. for native English speakers in Japan is to consider working as convenience store clerks or gas station attendants) is sound advice. I wonder if the person who posted that on that wackjob Dabito's website wasn't high on crack cocaine. But then again, most FG who log onto Debito's site suffer from a 'victim complex' and are under the illusion that Japan owes them a living and that Japan is the only country in the world where they can survive. But then again, maybe for many of these tragics, it is.
I feel genuinely for people who lose their jobs. We can all fall on hard times, and sometimes we just have to do what we have to do to survive. But come on, do you REALLY think working as a FG gas station attendant is the best option available under the circumstances?... I mean, fuck me senseless...

I agree. Many people under estimate themselves. There is a lot to do back in a western country. Problem is however, the longer you are in Japan the more comfortable you get and harder it is to adjust to life back in your native country. It can be very dangerous living in Japan for many years.
if one was to think all they are good for is working at 7-11 instead of back home, then they are desperate.

yes, there's a lot to do back in a western country. and people who have been in japan and skipped out on their taxes to go back to their western country need to stay there and let the people who have stuck it out in japan and weathered the economy and unemployment storm apply for what little jobs there are available here.

OK. squatting when I shit, smelling natto, riding a bike from the 1950's, having cops stop me for riding an old piece-o-shit bike, pizza with mayo, ALTs, old fucks pissing off the train platform, corn on everything, puke pancakes, and "tokyo culture" makes me comfortable.... I totally admit it.

Gunman Angry Over Poor English, Job Loss
Binghamton's police chief said a man who killed 13 people inside an immigrant community center was depressed after recently losing a job and angry that he couldn't speak English well.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski told CBS' The Early Show that the motives of 41-year-old Jiverly Wong, who had taken classes at the American Civic Association, to kill so many were not very clear.

Maybe this can get pinned on NOVA's boss.

I suspect it may be a long "rode" out of eikaiwa too...

Evidently grammar, punctuation, and capitalization are not necessities for teaching eikaiwa.
What is it with everyone under 25 these days? Have years of incessant texting on their mobile phones rendered them incapable of typing capital letters and apostrophes?

glad someone else has said it.

i didn't want to go ranting on about spelling and grammar, but i agree that the quality of english redaction has deteriorated significantly. normally i wouldn't bother nitpicking, especially in a venue as informal as this, but i feel that anyone who is employed teaching english should have at least a decent grasp of the fundamentals.

i don't know what the hell they're teaching in school these days, but it would seem that basics such as hononyms, use of an apostrophe and spelling are not in most curricula.

Yep, it does seem that the general ability to put one's thoughts into writing is steadily deteriorating (even with the advent of spelling and grammar checkers...). I'm not usually a grammar nazi, but most of the people that don't hit the Shift key anymore have never even heard of e. e. cummings so their only excuse is laziness (and/or ignorance). Either that, or this post is just one of the countless messages/texts they send off each day without so much as a second thought about the content - so why bother.
