Odd jobs in Tokyo

Postby jake9115 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:41 am

I'll be staying in Tokyo again this summer with my girlfriend. Me being american, and her japanese, we are trying to figure out how to raise a little spending money without needing a work visa. We are both university students.

Here's what we came up with: we'll put fliers in different wards of the city advertising translation service for $20 a page by native-speaking english and japanese university students. We'll leave an email address for scheduling pick-ups and drop-offs and payment.

Anything sound wrong with this plan? I know it's technically illegal since I have to visa, but do they prosecute that? I'd like to know if anyone has tried something like this, or something similar to raise money.

Thanks!

I may have some really dull editing work for slave wages for your Japanese girlfriend as I need native Japanese. No promises.

I didn't say this, but there are some roppongi bars/restaurants that will take FG's for cash. The wages are usually crap though. And you do so at your own risk of deportation.

Another suggestion is to perhaps see if you can take over somebody's private English lessons if they are going away for Summer. Private lessons are usually done in coffee shops for cash. No idea how you could find them - perhaps on some of the English Teachers forums.

We issued out summer hire letters already. Unbelieveably fast even for Japan.

You may want to start inquiries with the embassy. A lot of the Embassy's, especially, the US Embassy, hires a lot of college student summer hires and they will begin looking in the not too distant future.

From the US Embassy Tokyo website:
Q: I am a student looking for a meaningful experience during my summer vacation. Does the Embassy have any internships open?
A: The U.S. Embassy does not accept interns locally. U.S. citizen university students interested in internships should visit the State Department career info website www.careers.state.gov for information on fall, spring, and summer internships. Security clearances and other processing create a long lead-time between applying and beginning the internship. We urge qualified candidates to consider applying early.

That's internships Buck. They hire a bunch of students (or used to do so) for a lot of jobs, abeit some very menial ones, but others that border on internships. They do not normally announce these with any intensity as they try to keep these with in the embassy community as much as legally is possible.
