What job should I try for in Japan?

Postby Sideshow » Wed May 18, 2011 11:59 am

Hi, new member here. I've lurked for a while and tried to read most of the board before posting, but if you all would be so kind I have a few questions.

I'm currently in college for networking. Would this be applicable or helpful at all in securing a job in Japan?

If you was in the US (as I am currently) what steps would you take before coming over? Four year degree? In what subject? Preparations?

Do you have to travel to Japan before finding a job there? I seen where you all talk about gaijinpot.com. Any other sites like this?

Assuming I wanted a non teaching job, what would my best alternative be? I know there are American investment bankers over there. Do you know how they got started living in Japan?

Thanks for your help. I was on here daily during the earthquakes making sure all the regulars were accounted for. I know you all know nothing about me, but I like some of you already.

You sound like you'd put out on a first date, welcome aboard.

Get at least a 4 year degree, a wad of experience (internships, summer jobs, anything that makes the resume sparkle), learn the Japanese that is associated with your field of study, and learn to deal with things that on the surface make no sense whatsoever, and that make less sense once you've scratched the surface.

I'm hoping it ends (on our Sunday) before I have to hear the Saizae-san song....funny, I never got that way hearing the Simpson's theme.

I'm not exactly a believer xcept for... grass is green, water is wet, and women have seecrets...
But must admit that things are quite turning to shit these days... If some people feel more secure to think that it's from a divine intervention... so be it...

Me I prefer the real scary scenario... nobody's in charge, nobody's really in control... good or bad don't even really exist it's all a matter of viewpoint...

So, if I was to learn the japanese terms for the networking field, would I be able to find a job doing that, do you think? Also, is anyone here married to a Japanese person? Does that guarantee a visa or do you still have to make 250,000 yen?

IT in Japan is shit and they are way behind the US. Even if you could get a job in that field here with your basic Japanese it would be a shit job that would not help you develop your career and pay you a lot less that you would make in the US.

Well, if I were you, I'd go for blow. But that's just personal preference. Mind you, I'd also settle for hand if it came to the crunch.
As for employment, like SJ said, Japan is done.

If your spouse makes enough to support you (on paper) you should get a visa. All visas need a sponsor, ie: company, spouse, spouse's parent, a foreign government for diplomat visas...

Well he could be like an immigrant, arriving in a new strange country only to discover that its not the shining bastion of opportunity his annoying cousin made it out to be. So, to subsidize his meager existence, he starts taking up odd jobs, which are usually of questionable legal and moral standings. Eventually he'll conquer the criminal underworld leaving behind a trail of corpses, broken hearts, and tears to take his rightful throne at the top.

Wait, I think that was the plot to GTAIV

I have no delusions of an easy, carefree life. I'm more just wondering, instead of hopping a plane thinking I'll find a job, planning and studying for a few years in a specific field and then finding a slightly less shit job.

Can I ask the ones that have read this so far, what do you do (teach English I assume), how long and what's your level of Japanese? Who here can probably speak the most Japanese?

Don't the plan "find a company that need to send expat to japan" work a littul better by now ? Because I'm pretty sure that people usually send are not exactly interested anymore...

Why make assumptions? I'm an IT industry recruiter.

how long and what's your level of Japanese?

I can generally handle daily conversation as long as it's not too deep, understand about 70-80% of what I see on TV, read business emails, and struggle through news paper articles.

Who here can probably speak the most Japanese?

Takechanpoo. He's (supposedly) Japanese. If you're wondering which gaijin (which I'm sure you were), that's a pretty stupid question.

Sideshow. Unless you are in the financial industry, you will likely earn a lot less in Japan than you would in the U.S.

Teaching English is your best bet. With all the gringos running for the hills, you have better chance of landing a job. You may even have some negotiating power.

Maybe compared to non finance jobs. However, if SS can land a job in finance here he or she can probably land one in finance in the US and still make more money there.

And in addition Sideshow.

Don't take this as me giving you shit, because every month or so someone who wants to come to Japan comes aboard with a similar question, and the best advice is to get a killer education and learn as much Japanese as possible in the US, then explore your options for employment in Japan. Learn the language associated with your field of study. It doesn't matter what your reason for coming here is, even if it's just for the girls, prepare yourself for your life, not just for a potential life in Japan.
As for language skills, I can read biology and pharmatech documents that would make most Japanese people's head spin. I can read the same stuff in English that would make most native speaker's of English's head spin. Could I read a law book in Japanese? A book about computer programming in Japanese? A poem in Japanese? No, no, and no. Can I talk with most Japanese people? Yes. Do I seriously fuck up the language on a daily basis? Yes. Bottom line, for what I do, I know the language in my native language and in Japanese. Do I make a mint? No. Do I hang out in Roppongi? No, I prefer Kabukicho.
