Which is absolute crap. It seems that most non-US carriers use the same rules. I didn't check ahead when I flew over here (from Korea) last month and got jacked for $136 in overweight luggage fees. They (Asiana) let me get 30kg for free, but charged me for the other 34kg.

Thankfully they didn't weigh my two carry-on bags, or I'm sure they'd have wanted even more money.

computer aboard the plane

Postby karekora » Sun Oct 17, 2004 4:41 am

me again... :devil2:

i'm going to take my laptop with me on the plane as hand luggage.

Do i have to declare it??

I remember that one of the reasons i never bought a computer in Hong Kong was because I might have to have paid alot in Airport charges if they found it on me. But i can't remember if thats just because it was a new computer.....................

I've never declared a laptop anywhere I've traveled, so I'd say no. They're common enough that nobody really cares about them anymore.

I flew JAL across Japan carrying a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft rucksack with rollers, I could barely lift it, I had to drag it. Oh man you should have seen me dragging it, plus another suitcase and my camera bag (I'd been in-country for 3 months) on the Yamanote-sen during morning rush hour.

JAL checked my huge rucksack in with no problems, although the clerk couldn't lift it either. He merely put a tag on it:

He got another clerk to help him lift it onto the belt. I weighed it when I got home, 90 lbs, over twice the limit. I never got charged any extra for overweight. My other suitcase probably broke the limit too.

So take those weight restrictions with a grain of salt. They might be strict, they might not.

If you have an open tocket ask them to push the weight limit up, usually they do it since open ticket are for long term visitor.

I put a PC tower in my carry on back in 2001 on a United Airlines flight, and this was international... they let me carry it on. I am sure the tower alone weighed 50 pounds... I have all kinds of drives and such inside. I also stuffed 2 pairs of new shoes and a bunch of other items in this same bag... I begged the lady at the counter to let me take it, and what do you know, she did. I was shocked.

I also brought 4 suitcases with me on that same flight. I only had to pay for one for some incredible reason. She let me on with 3 checked bags. I think she felt sorry for me for having to carry and wheel all that luggage. It was a mess but I was sure thankful she let me on with all that stuff.

God bless you United Airlines lady!

I'm not so sure about that. This was at Hakodate airport, the guy ahead of me in line had a 5 foot tall stack of styrofoam containers full of live crabs. I watched in amazement as he kept pushing down the styrofoam lids to keep the crabs from crawling out, they were huge and could easily crawl out. Everyone was checking in fresh (or live) seafood in bulk. This may have had a significant effect on the checkin, my overweight rucksack probably seemed easy in comparison to handling live crabs.
