Soviet Supreme takes over the Eagle 810 of AFN

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Eagle 810 off-air [Armed Forces Network radio of Kanto]
Eagle 810 is not available Monday through Jan. 27, and Jan. 30 and 31 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. due to scheduled maintenance (PDF link to the Fuji Flyer newspaper of Yokota Air Base)

YIKES! In the past week I've heard Russian coming out of my car radio which is set to Eagle 810 of AFN.

It is supposed to be broadcasting from Yokota Air Base on the 810 kHz AM band at 50,000 watts. But noooooo...but the Eagle 810 has more downtime than a 20 watt college radio station in the States run by hangover students.

From what russian I can understand, I've been receiving Soviet Supreme's People's Commissariat broadcasting from Primorskii Krai, the region of Siberia that includes the port city of Vladivostok. The communication pros at AFN say they should be back on the air with a new antenna soon. According to the amateur radio geeks who do AM radio DXing (listening for distant AM radio stations) this is going to be a, " Good chance for DXers in the area for receiving Russian Primorskii Kraii and Korean stations on the same frequency!"
Oh gr-r-reat---now I can listen to a duet by Lil' Kim and Soviet Supreme on the Russian Eagle 810(tm).

They are replacing their antennas. It was supposed to be completed by the end of January, but apparently it is going to take a bit longer!

BTW, many years ago I was told (don't know if it is true, but it sounds reasonable) that the reason for the Russian and Chosen stations being right on top of the 810 signal was that during a war, they could be used for Jamming the AFN signal to prevent it from being used for such neat things as code transmission, etc.

Do not let anyone fool you. This is indeed work of the great Soviet Supreme. I know world loves the Soviet Union and I feel it is duty to allow everyone to hear great radio that can only come from the USSR. You are not needing this "J-Pop" when you can have great Soviet radio program.
