At The Showa Hairdresser

There's a Japanese site here which has an interesting collection of Showa era hairdresser ads with pictures of the models and salons. Here are a few to give you a taste. Even though the site is fairly cluttered, it's worth a browse if you like fashion or ephemera.

I can see why you would dislike that time frame. Taxi's were 60 yen (same price as cigarettes), beer in the now extinct Obin was 90 yen. All night was negotiable between 2,000 yen an 3,600 (or less). A short pop was 1,800 yen.

A full course western meal for two was from 1,000 to 1,500 yen.

Yup, good thing those times are gone.

That's so long ago, the value of the Yen was so different, it's meaningless. For comparison in Dollars:

I'm not sure that chart is accurate, I never have found a really authoritative historical Yen/$ exchange rate chart that goes back this far. One source indicated that in 1939, the rate was fixed at 4.35Y per $, and was reset at 360Y/$ in 1949 when trading in Yen was officially resumed. I want to see more data on that.

You might wanna say that, but I made a lot less money and partied twice as much as now.

And if you wanna say having a different babe, sometimes two, or three, a night, every night, was also a time frame that you're glad is no longer with us, far be it from me to stand in your way. But, I know which era I liked.....

I don't have the data for you, but in the 1960s' I could and did go on the town two or three times a week in Shimonoseki, Matsuyama (IiyoNagahama) Kobe, Sakai, Nagoya, Shimizu, Yokohama and all points in between, and still have the cab fare back home in the morning. Not only that but I arrived home with a full stomach and a sore dick every time.
Can't do that today, not I might add due, to age. It would just cost too much at today's prices.:(

Edit: Not only that, the girls had a lot more class, it's not all in the hairdo fellas.;)

Sounds like you and Cranky had an awesome time. And some of those pictures were pretty nice - the hairdo's had their own style.

So that's where I get my good looks (couldn't have been from you!). :p

Now it's time to make sure I haven't been omitted from your will. When can I expect a copy?
