Mickey Rooney Heartbroken His "Mr. Yunioshi" Character Is Called Racist

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Aug 26, 2008 8:12 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Sacbee: Rooney says racism charge at '61 film role 'breaks my heart'
Mickey Rooney got heartburn when he learned why his 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's" had been pulled for "Ratatouille" at east Sacramento's free Screen on the Green movie series Saturday night...One of the most beloved and enduring movie actors in American history, Rooney was shocked to hear that his comic role as Mr. Yunioshi, Audrey Hepburn's cantankerous upstairs neighbor in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," had been branded racist by several Asian American activists in Sacramento. "Don't break me up – I wouldn't offend any person, be they black, Asian or whatever," said the veteran of 360 films...CAPITAL – the Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership – an umbrella group for more than 90 local organizations, told the Sacramento City Council that Rooney's bucktoothed Japanese character with thick glasses and exaggerated Asian accent perpetuated "offensive, derogatory and hateful racial stereotypes detrimental and destructive to our society." Responded Rooney: "It breaks my heart. Blake Edwards, who directed the picture, wanted me to do it because he was a comedy director. They hired me to do this overboard, and we had fun doing it." Rooney, who occasionally shows the Mr. Yunioshi clip as part of his traveling stage show, added that "never in all the more than 40 years after we made it – not one complaint. Everyplace I've gone in the world people say, 'God you were so funny.' Asians and Chinese come up to me and say 'Mickey you were out of this world' "...Rooney's wife, Jan, who said they love Chinese art, food, culture and medicine, explained the film role was meant to be fun. "It's terribly sad, and I feel bad for the people taking offense," she said. "I could see him almost in tears the other day. We both were," she said. "When people feel hurt that way, it hurts us"...Rooney said that if he'd known that people would be so offended, "I wouldn't have done it." "Those that didn't like it, I forgive them and God bless America," he said. "God bless the universe, God bless Japanese, Chinese, Indians, all of them, and let's have peace"...more...

One response in Hyphen Magazine:

Well, that explains it all. Wearing buck teeth, taping your eyelids, and adopting a stereotypical Asian accent in a cinematic classic (whilst denying the racism behind it) is all good if you grew up poor...and if you have an acupuncturist. I realize they're old. It'd be easier getting an 88-year-old to slam dunk a basketball than to have him or her shake these racial notions that they've been taught and re-taught since they were kids. But younger generations would be remiss if they didn't school these older folks on how their legacies have affected us. Rooney says it "breaks his heart" to hear these accusations of racism. Well, if you've never been the target of countless variations of a Mr. Yunioshi impression (and yes, it is much more than just playground taunts), then you have no real claim to that heartbreak. I don't care how much you love Chinese food.

Is it just me, or did that go out of their way to make the name "Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership " just so it can spell out CAPITAL ?

I've seen the movie - I can see why some people would be offended. If it was made today, it wouldn't be right, but 40 years ago - things were different.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

Just like the non-Japanese Sumo advertisement in the UK, some small group (CAPITAL) is trying to get some press by singling out something. More pathetic that all they could find to get steamed about is some movie made in the early 1960s. They really need to try harder. These knuckleheads are just revisionists, trying to erase history instead of keeping it as a study guide.

Someone will soon sue the Al Jolsen estate for his "mammie" act from the 1920s.

Well I sure hope the CAPITAL people don't watch any Japanese shows, like oh Mechiake?

There have been times when I think Japanese comdey shows have crossed the line, but isn't that what comedy is about?
Spare a drink?

Well, okay, if the "magazine" revenue and "blog" revenue aren't fungible.
