Avex in Public Dispute With Korean Promoter

Postby Mulboyne » Sat Apr 30, 2011 4:04 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Music company Avex has issued a statement (Japanese PDF) about the Korean idol trio Junsu/Jaejoong/Yoochun (also known, confusingly, as JYJ). The three were originally members of Toho Shinki but were "encouraged" by some shady figures to break away in a development which resembles the shenanigans surrounding the girl group Kara. Avex has the Japanese rights for JYJ but said last September it would suspend promotion for the group because the president of their new management company was under investigation in Korea for links to organized crime. In a new development, JYJ are apparently planning a June charity concert for Tohoku disaster relief at Saitama Super Arena. However, the venue has a notice on its home page (Japanese) saying that there has been no agreement on the use of the arena. Avex is also upset because they claim to have exclusive rights for any JYJ activity in Japan and have not changed their position from last year about refusing to allow any events while the legal proceedings remain unresolved. Their statement acknowledges that JYJ fans might think a charity event ought to be separated from the ongoing dispute but Avex says some of its managers have received threats, which makes them concerned about the true nature of the event. The company confirms it will maintain its hands-off stance and continues to assert its rights to JYJ in Japan.

Heh. What makes this story interesting to me, anyway, is how it represents yet another example of Japan getting sand kicked in its face by the nascent Big Boys to the west.

-catone
-How can they have a concert, charity or otherwise, if they can't promote it?
-I think I can see Jesus in the chest of that young homosexual boy on the right.

AsiaOne: JYJ sues Japanese agency over cancellation of concert
JYJ has filed a lawsuit in Japan against their management company AVEX Entertainment for interfering with their attempt to hold a charity concert...However, the concert's venues have canceled their contracts with JYJ after AVEX allegedly pressured them. JYJ's agency C-JeS Entertainment and the concert organizer ZAK Corporation have filed two provisional dispositions against AVEX with the Tokyo District Court.

AVEX released an official statement, in which they do not deny the action. "Our company holds the exclusive rights for JYJ's activities in Japan, and we have just taken actions against the infringement rightfully and properly," AVEX said. They also claimed that they have received blackmails and threats due to the matter.

AVEX signed a contract with three members of JYJ in early 2010 after JYJ filed the lawsuit with SM Entertainment. A few months later, AVEX announced the "suspension of activities" of three members, arguing JYJ should refrain from promoting in Japan while legal proceedings against SM Entertainment were under way in Korea.

This "suspension of activities" has kept JYJ from conducting any promotional activities in Japan. Even after the suspension, however, AVEX has continued to make profits with products such as DVDs and JYJ footage.

Due to their ongoing lawsuit with their management company, JYJ has had difficulties in their activities in Korea as well. They have released an album, held concerts globally, and acted in dramas and musicals, but have had trouble getting airtime on television entertainment shows.

Another pop group, KARA, who also had three members embroiled in a dispute with their management company DSP for nearly 3 months, recently announced they have resolved the disagreement and will continue their career with DSP.
