Screw the Olympics - Bring on High School Ball

Postby mr. sparkle » Mon Aug 16, 2004 12:30 pm

Man, the Olympics sure makes for boring viewing in Japan. I was looking for any news of the dream team going up in flames. But NO......

I am enjoying the high school baseball tourney much more. It's almost like watching college hoops back home. A more pure version of the sport. In fact, it might be kind of fun to attend a game. Any going on in Tokyo this week? I would even go for a pro game if anyone wants to go see some Giants ball. PM me if you are a baseball freak and want to go to a game this week.

Morbid fascination

Postby canman » Mon Aug 16, 2004 12:57 pm

I've been watching the tournament for the past five years. I started watching it when I was stuck in the hospital over the Obon holiday for knee surgery. But it started to grow on me. I agree with Mr. Sparkle it is a pure form of the game, but also I'm amazed at how outdated or stupid some of these old fart managers are. Get a man on first base with less than two outs of course you bunt. No thinking about it, it has been done for 86 years so we do it. Forget that its your clean up hitter who is currently hitting .564, no he has to bunt. And the sliding into first base, its a proven fact that it slows you down, hence nobody in the majors does it. But these kids go head first time after time. I was watching the heart breaking game between Yokohama and Kyoto, what a game, I felt so sorry for the losing pitcher who lost it on the mound after the winning run scored. Yep that's as true as you can get. Go Darvish, and Tohoku!!!

I kinda wonder how this was covered back in the US. Personally, I think it's funny as hell that they got spanked (92-73) and knocked out in the first round. I've been hoping for something like this to happen to the "dream team" for a long, long time.

Maybe there is a god after all!

They're not eliminated yet.

The loss was a blow to the Americans' confidence, but it did little to hurt their gold medal chances. They need only to finish in the top four of their six-team group to reach the quarterfinals.

That's what my passport tells me. I just think it's crap to have pros playing in what's supposed to be an amateur competition.
