The Zen of Shane MacGowan

In Japan two years ago the rest of the Pogues decided to fire Shane because he had missed several gigs through drink. "Touring was getting to me", he recalls. "In Japan we went on a train from Tokyo to Osako and I drank Saki all the way and when I got off the train I fell and broke my head open and was unable to do the gig that night. Two days later they said to me it's be better if we didn't play together anymore and I agreed with them."
... He would be a great fella to have on your side in a game of Trival Pursuit. Especially should the subject be Japanese culture. On the Yuko Mishima, the author who committed hara-kiri in the Japanese army HQ in Tokyo, Shane is formidable. "He thought the Japanese nation had lost its soul. He hated the way the country was being run by bread-obsessed capitalists and finally found that he couldn't write anything angry enough, so he topped himself. He committed ritual hara-kiri." Would you ever consider committing ritual suicide? "Naah!" he laughs.

My God he is still alive. Not many teeth left. Most foreigners find a big increase in their alcohol comsumption when they get to Japan, and considering what Sean MacGowan was like before coming here...

As a college freshman in 1986, I got to party with Shane and the rest of the boys, back stage at a Pogues show (they were double-bill with Los Lobos, a mixture that worked really well.) Next time they came through California to open for Dylan (1988?), Shane wasn't there. I asked the guys and they said, "he was too drunk to get on the plane." I imagined him just being drunk at the airport and being refused: but in reality it turned out he was just on such a long bender and in absolutely no shape to travel at all so they ditched his ass. They are great musicians and so of course they were a decent show, but without the energy of Shane it's nearly as boring as the Chieftens and so I won't go.
