Gaijin TV Guide

Postby ramchop » Tue Dec 10, 2002 12:42 pm

Is there an online guide to TV in Japan? I don't mean the pitiful selection of English programs published by Metropolis.

What I'm after is the fantastic Japanese stuff, like Blackmail on Tuesday TV? ?pm, that wierd "cycle for hundreds of kms to fatten up the bikini girl" Saturday TV? 9:30pm, and any other gems that I'm unaware of.

Yes the TV here is terrible, but the novelty hasn't even started to wear off yet.

Basically, I read the Japanese schedules mangled through the Great and Almighty FISH

For example cable TV for Star Trek'Enterprise' is at:

Try the piece-o-shite "ZONE81 English TV guide for Japan
Tokyo TV listings for English programs"

Star Channel has the junk guide in PDF, arrrrg"

No online TV guide, is there a paper version? Or do I have to buy 7 English newspapers to find out what the regular weekly programs are? (assuming they have complete listings)

What are the must see Japanese TV programs anyway?

OK, ok.
There are TV guides of regular RF broadcasts in the Japan Times, GOMIuri, and IHT/Asahi---but the suck like soba of dog-drool.

Each of those English papers with explain highlights of 4 or 5 Japanese programs and whatever foreign movies are playing that evening. It's piss poor info and OFTEN incorrect on program times.

Try reading the weekly column "Televiews" by Wm. Penn---the poor suffering bastard has been watching and reporting on Japanese TV for 13 years:
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/newse/20021205woa8.htm

There is a "secret" cable TV guide published in Japanese called "Monthly SkyPerfecTV!" which has 10 pages of English information. Sony's "from-hanna" website was giving away one free issue (regularly 500yen/m) but that offer has disappeared (and the info it contained sucked dead kappi snot).

English TV is of zero concern to the Japanese and the info/press reflects it. MANY times I have thought of putting out an iMode English TV Guide but I hate dealing with propaganda drones at NHK, and Fuji TV, et al are not nice to the gaijin press.

Sorry, but hey it's JAPAN.

Variety show takes top Tellie honors
The Daily Yomiuri / Dec 12 2002
The Tellie for Most Creative Use of Network Resources goes to Yugata DonDon on the Hokkaido TV Asahi affiliate, HTB. The folks up north launched a "Kuki mo Gochiso" (Clean Air) campaign on May 31, and are still at it. They began by forcing the show's chief announcer, Ryutaro Tojima, to quit smoking or get off the show. (He met the challenge and still holds his seat.) They have continued to discover such rareties as a smoke-free college campus, a hospital that pays staff a small allowance not to smoke (currently 205 of 323 employees are collecting it) and a campaign to clean up the air at Shin-Chitose Airport. Follow along with the continuing saga at http://www.htb.co.jp
