The current problematic work, however is "NO NUDE by KISHIN 1 200XX TOKYO" which was released and exhibited in January. He took the photos last summer in locations including Odaiba, Akasaka and Aoyama. Around half of them in the sixty page collection were taken outside and at night and one of them was used for the exhibition poster. A Yomiuri report (Japanese) says police received several calls at the time from from people who saw the photography taking place but there's no indication of whether they responded. The report describes one picture, taken in Aoyama Cemetery, where the model is shown posing on a tombstone. Local officials are quoted saying they gave no permission for the cemetery to be used for any such purpose. Similarly, JR East say they did not give permission for the photograph taken near a stretch of the Yamanote line between Meguro and Ebisu stations. I've used a number of Kishin's photographs here on FG (apparently never crediting the source since a search for his name only turns up a story posted by Taro). As far as overseas audiences go, his most famous photo is probably the one featuring John Lennon & Yoko Ono on the front of "Double Fantasy"
It's slightly odd that the police would wait so long to take any action if they thought there was a case to make for public indecency. Kishin is pretty well-known and the exhibition poster also doubled as the cover for the January edition of photography magazine "Asahi Camera" (NSFW).

This is sheer, #^%$* hypocrisy.
Why is the guy allowed to do this sort of thing for years and then suddenly arrested? It's such typically hypocritical Japanese behavior.
And if they arrest Shinoyama, why are no other arrests made for the exhibitionist market that is so huge in this country (bar the couple of birds that posed nude in front of Miyazaki City Hall), as a simple Google Images search shows. (Link definitely NSFW)

Just after the 30 second mark, this TV report shows the Aoyama cemetery shot (with Roppongi Hills in the background) and the Yamanote Line shot. The models are blurred but you can clearly see in the that they are actually right by the tracks for the Yamanote set-up.

My guess is that someone working for JR or the Aoyama Cemetary just recently saw a photo and decided to get a bug up his or her butt about it and called the police.

We were in Ueno Park a while back and there were a couple of photographers with a girl getting dressed/undressed in some kind of collapsible fabric tube. I ambled over to have a look-see down the tube but one of the guys said "No!" "You guys shooting a porno?" I asked. "No porno," they said. But they probably were.

He's now admitted the charges, saying that he thought he had been careful not to be seen by the public when he was taking the pictures. The papers say that he the prosecutor is set to bring a formal case.
