been lurking this thread. glad to see i'm not the only one with these opinions. the tv in our place is also on way too much. when and if i ever get my own place, one steadfast rule will be that the tv is to be off during dinner. as it is, if the outlaws aren't around, i've taken to turning it off. it's nothing but loud, obnoxious noise and the banal, infantile drivel that gets passed off as "programming" here is pathetic.

The same overpaid tarento doing unfunny stuff for the most part.

agree 110%. here's another thing i really don't get.. where the hell is the entertainment value in game shows (or the marginal crap that gets passed off for game shows here) that constantly feature the same washed up "celebrity" hacks? maybe it's just me, but i always thought what made game shows interesting is that they feature regular people. i just don't see the point in watching someone who's already rich wininng trips and prizes.

On top of that, saying that the bullying culture in Japan is due to television (the original topic here) is, in my opinion, a bit much. I'd lay the blame a lot more quickly on the whole "nail that sticks out gets pounded down" and "in group", "out group" philosophies before turning to tv.

What do you call this kind of shit ?
Image
Is it variety tv, comedy or a gameshow or what ?

Most foreigners only know the genre as 'Japanese' but I'm wondering what you'd call it ?

I'd call it slapstick. It's a comedy show aimed at adults (Mecha Ike). If your (the general you, not you specifically) kids are watching it, then it's your fucking fault, not the TV's.

On top of that, just saying that any violence on TV will result in children bullying each other is ridiculous, and doesn't hold water. There's more violence on TV in the states than here, but we don't have the same problems with systematic bullying that the Japanese do.

I've heard in a few reviews (no recollection of where, though), that the producers say that ordinary people don't get good ratings - viewers want to see celebrities, even if it's doing crap that ordinary people do every day.

Personally, I say bull to that. One of the best J-shows I remember was one from the late 90's called something like "family challenge". They'd show up at a family's home and assign the father some difficult (but not impossible, they'd always demonstrate it first) task that he had to learn to do in a week: ride a unicycle along a balance beam, be able to distinguish 6 different varieties of rice, play a song with handbells, etc. They'd film him all week and show how the whole family came together (or didn't) for support, then he'd have to perform the task in the studio. If he succeeded, the family won 3 million yen worth of prizes that they'd all picked out at the very beginning. About 80% of the time, however, he didn't make it.

Funny, heartwarming, sincere, and nobody got kicked in the head. I wish they'd bring that one back.

Just to add to this "when I was a kid I wasn't allowed to watch tv" thingie that several people have raised...

I find that what is actually worse than TV (and J-TV for the most part IS shit) is fucking DS games. Both my kids have 'em (they were gifts from grandparents:confused: ) and my wife and I have pretty strict rules limiting the time they can play on them. However, what I find frustrating is when the neighbourhood kids come over, they all bring their DS and want to sit around (without interacting with each other in the least) and play their own games. Often I'll say, "stop playing DS. Its a lovely day, go otside and and play" only to discover that they all have shoved off to the park to continue doing exactly the same thing.

Regarding J-TV and kids, most of it is crap, with some exceptions. My kids like Darwin ga Kita on Sunday nights (which features all sorts of wierd and wonderful insights into the animal kingdom) and IQ Supuri (a somewhat educational quiz show). Of course they also like the usual J-manga shit.

Frankly speaking, I find that if I start watching J-TV with my wife, in 99.9999% of cases I end up slinking off into another room, because we either have an arguement over my inevitable complaints, or I just cant gamman through the torture for more that about 10 mins and eventually "escape" to the internet or something.

I have asked several J-folk what it is that they find so "funny" or "clever" about people like Moody, Kojima Yoshio (the oppupi idiot) etc, and the usual response is "nothing special". I suspect that the reason for their success is that they get laughs because everyone else is laughing.

Enough ranting for this morning....

Well screw you all! I watched large quantities of TV when I was young. Still remember all the theme songs to all the games shows. Could I have better spent the time composing symphonies? No you see I wasn't a boy genius. I probably witrnessed several thousand murders on all the various cop shows. Did it make me a murderer? All in all I was able even as a kid to distinguish the level of retardedness that comedy and drama provided and pick the level right for me.

Kids but more importantly parents could learn alot more this.

SL, THAT was an outstanding show and it got discussions going like, "Daddy, can you do that?", so I agree with you.

I think the reason the studios use tarento so much is that all the companies are in bed together and since they own the tarento, the way they are paid is handled in such a way that it barely makes a difference to the balance book IMO.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.
