Here's a new posh place - 300$ per film, I wonder if they get released on time or do they just air re-runs of Neon Genesis for Otaku with too much money?

For $300,000 you could build a pretty swank home theater...

Looks like the Incredible Hulk is getting raped by the Japanese movie companies as the only local release near me is a god forsaken dub.

Expect more and more of that in the future. Mulboyne started a nice thread on this topic:

The reason they gave apparently is that the Incredible Hulk has been deemed a "kids" movie and as such, gets a dub only release. The theaters I called all reported a subtitle version being available however they had no plans to carry it. I then asked why they had subtitled and dubbed showings of Kung Fu Panda which is obviously suited to that demographic, and all they could give me was a "sumimasen". Eventually told the theater manager I was going to download the flick and be done with it. So much for saving our movies... :(

'Dark Knight' Soars Past $400 Million

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=2505&p=.htm
On its 18th day of release, The Dark Knight sprinted past the $400 million mark, shattering yet another record in its amazing run.

The weekend also saw the resurrection of the dusty Mummy franchise. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor outdrew Dark Knight on Friday but unraveled at a faster rate (as is increasingly the norm for big summer movies in their first weekends)

The movie started out revolving around a top-secret U.S. special forces team, but will now be about a Brussels-based, international co-ed force of operatives who use hi-tech equipment to battle Cobra

Given that western super hero films don't necessarily do all that well in Japan, I'm not surprised that the J trailer for the upcoming film watchman downplays those aspects but I was a bit surprised to see it positioned as something along the lines of a political thriller with some fanatical elements (the alternate history time with Nixon is fairly downplayed in the US materials I've seen so far)
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

The new Fast and Furious movie will be out on April 3 for the rest of the civilized world. No opening date planned for Japan. I can't predict if this is going to bomb or be any good.

Yeah, I was just checking the official web site. Wolverine opens all over the world on April 29, April 30, or May 1 but doesn't come out in Japan till Aug 22.

At least they're releasing the new "Star Trek" within the same month as the US release, though it will be a few weeks late.

Just saw Star Trek and honestly, it satisfied me in ways a woman could never reach. The cinema was just under half full, with screenings of some Japanese flick, the Rookie, apparently drawing all the crowd. Their loss I suppose...

In other news, Wolverine Origins has been delayed until September which makes me glad that I didn't download the leaked DVD rip. Thanks Japan!

S. Korean anti-Americanizm leads to title change

Captain America will keep its patriotic full title in most of the world when the superhero adventure hits the big-screen.

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios gave distributors around the world the option of shortening the title of "Captain America: The First Avenger" to simply "The First Avenger," out of concern about anti-American sentiment.

But the only countries that took them up on it were Russia, Ukraine and South Korea.

As much as I like laughing at SK's xenophobia, I'm not sure that it's really warranted here. Captain [insert foreign country here] as a movie title sure won't sell nearly as much as "The first Avenger" in most countries outside the U.S.

So now that major Hollywood movies are getting a worldwide release the same week in most markets, why is Japan still so slow with certain movies? I noticed that "Avengers: Age of Ultron" which was released pretty much everywhere last week won't hit theaters here till July 4.

The average J-person always says "translation takes time" but I think they just don't want to clog up the theaters here with too many kaigai eiga at the same time. (fucked priorities and scheduling)

That's what they usually say but it's obviously not that or other markets would have the same problem. I have heard a more intelligent version of that excuse which is that a certain well-known translator has cornered the market and can only handle so much work at a time. That's a lot more believable but I still have no idea whether it's true or not.

If there's any truth to that, it's really sad. In more than a few major movies, the over hyped "famous" translators have been pretty terrible. There was major j-nerd backlash during the lord of the rings trilogy because the "famous" translator mistook words like "kingdoms" for "kings" and resulted in confusion. On the other hand, there seem to be plenty of free J-subtitles available online from enthusiasts the moment any major movie or TV show is released. I wouldn't say they're error free but often times they get updated with corrections...which is more than can be said for what gets officially released.

Natsuko Toda is a perfect example of geriatric blockage that impedes progress. Her subtitles ensure that Japanese viewers don't fully understand what's going on. She just glosses over stuff she doesn't understand herself, which is a lot.

It's pretty interesting when you can not only catch the mistakes but understand why they were made. One I remember clearly is the episode in "Sopranos" season five when Tony Blundetto, played by Steve Buscemi, gets out of jail. He's been in jail since the '80's and he shows up at his welcome home party dressed like Don Johnson in Miami Vice. Artie Bucco asks, "Where's Tubbs?" The Japanese subtitles say something like, "痩せたね."

Back home, translators are unknown. But switch the voice actors doing the work for most celebrities and everybody lose their shit...

Which is a shame because they really do an awfull job most of the time.
Basically Bruce Willis-anything- and Fox Mulder sound the same in french... (The yippy kay yay motherfucker kind of same) It's nearly unpossible to get the constant spleen/oppressive/depressive mood in XFiles in the French version.
