Sun Herald: Japan will return Moss Point's favor
MOSS POINT - As part of a special documentary for Japanese TV, one area resident may wind up touring the streets of Tokyo with a camera crew. Coordinators with ZaZou Productions in New York City are in Moss Point this week to shoot footage and look for people willing to travel to Japan and have their journey documented. The person selected will receive a free trip to Japan and their experience will be broadcast on Tokyo Broadcasting System's Sanma's Super Karakuri TV. Moss Point was selected because it is one of the few high schools in the nation to teach Japanese, said Asako Sugiyama, a coordinator with the production agency...Auditions will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. High school students, parents and area residents are invited to compete. The production crew will also hold open call auditions at the high school's football field at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The crew will shoot video footage of residents eating Japanese food at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the field.

That and the senile oldies specially selected so we can laugh at their stupid answers to a quiz. The show's a variety masterpiece!!

When I stayed with a host family, they *loved* this program. Watched it every night. I would say I hated this one especially, but I more or less detested every bit of TV I watched in Japan. Nothing like great "dinner conversation" consisting of watching TV you barely understand :)
That said, I did enjoy the segment with the Nigerian "Bobbi" whose Nihongo is about as incoherant as mine.

Us vs. them

Postby canman » Sat Mar 12, 2005 8:53 am

I feel this show really likes to play up the gaijin are animals and we the Jpaanese are at teh zoo to watch them. What really gets me is that Thane Camus is making fun of his fellow foreigner. I know he is getting a lot of money to do it. It was a little better when they showed how poor Japanese young people were at speaking English, but since it moved on to Bobbi and his buddies, it seems to be almost downright ridicule.
I was wondering these three guys that Thane is trying to teach Japanese to who are they and how do these guys come to Japan in the first place and hwo do they stay here.

Heheh, as far as I know it only comes on once a week on Sunday evenings... ;) Must've made a particularly strong impression!

Thanks for the info. I agree with you I used to like Camus, but he has really sold out. Don't get me started with Dave Spector. I don't understand why the guy is so anti-Live Door. He just keeps slamming him saying that Horie is trying to make a quick buck. Well Dave why don't you look at yourself, Mr. blue contacts and blonde dyed hair liar.
I hope that the people they get for the show know what they are getting into. How long will they stay, where will they be etc. My wife just asked me why don't they ever go to Canada and invite Canadians? Good question, although I already know the answer. Gaijn=Americans for most Japanese.

One show I used to love was called something like 'world's great TV' or something like that. It was like an expose on how fucked up the world is outside of Japan where they'd just show outrageous news clips from foreign countries and then talk about it. On one they showed this scene from America from a survellience camera where this guy walks into a liquor store and just point blank shot the cashier right in the face, no warning and grabbed what was probably about 50 bucks from the register. It's true, they had it on tape so what can you really say? I can't really pretend America isn't like that with that kind of evidence right there. So they show this poor guy getting killed and then it's like 'Well Megumi what do you think of that? Amerika kowaiiiii!' 'Sou desu ne?'

I met the shorter black dude at a club once. (Can't remember his name, but he's the one with the cupie-doll-hair-braid-thingies). Really nice guy]did[/i] mention his contract is really strict; one of the other guys was 'released' for 'pillaging' too many locals..

Ak have you ever watched

Postby canman » Sat Mar 12, 2005 1:31 pm

On Monday nights the Beato Takeshi show Sekai Marumie(sp). It is a little similar. They love to show all the American high speed chases and shoot outs and the like. And then the guests all get to comment on what they have just watched. Sometimes its harmless stuff like a granny skydiver or something harmless, but I think the real popular stuff always involves cars and guns.

That's because Japanese police are boring... when a bat-wielding druggee confronts them, they run like rent-a-cops.
