Transforming Identity In Japanese Photography

I just caught a small exhibition of work by artist/photographer Tomoko Sawada. "Sawada dresses in the clothes of various Japanese stereotypes, including hipster and businesswoman, and then hires professional portrait photographers to take her picture. In other cases, Sawada poses in automated photo booths". Very amusing. One of the best selections was "Omiai". The book would set you back about 4,000 yen but click on this link on her site and you can see most of them for free. Some of her other pictures are here, here and here. Or just type "Tomoko Sawada" into Google Images.
A number of Japanese photographers have played with image and identity over the years. This article, Chameleon Dreams looks at some of them and has a selection of their work.
