I saw this exhibit twice. The geek/otaku side of mie got a big kick out of seeing a life sized Zaku head, but the intelectual in me enjoyed the commentary about Japan's bleak social crisis! Yay!

saw it. it's pretty sweet - but there's too much of that "look at how fucked up the japanese are!" type of bullshit americans love to eat up. considering it's curated by a japanese artist, it's definately tailored to american's sensibilities and comes off more as a zoo-sightseeing excursion than a cultural exhibition.

Seariously though, I know it was meant to be really serious, but when you're a big geek you can't help but be more enamoured with the Daicon IV video than the social commentary.

Murakami's art education started out along fairly conventional lines. He studied nihonga painting, a Japanese style that emerged in the 19th century in reaction to Western influences, and briefly tried his hand at anime. In the early 1990s, while finishing his Ph.. at Tokyo National University, he set his sights on a career as a contemporary artist. His first successful works borrowed from otaku, the geeky male subculture of sci-fi anime, manga, and video games with an obsessive, pedophilic edge.
