Anyone watching "Sakura"?

Postby cstaylor » Thu Aug 08, 2002 8:32 am

There's this morning drama that's been on for the last few months... it stars Thane Camus of Karakuri terebi fame... here's the plot: a nisei girl ("Sakura") from Hawaii goes to teach English in Japan. She's engaged to Thane, who appears in dream and telephone sequences during the show.

In the background, Sakura is having a semi-serious love relationship with a fellow Japanese English teacher... and the only way that the writers could put them together is to have Thane breakup with Sakura (otherwise Sakura would look like a tart and her Japanese lover would be, at best, an oppurtunist).

Oh, and the reason Thane breaks up with Sakura? She's become "too Japanese". Nice cover... projecting upon the gaijin the Japanese attitude of "gaijin kusai". :?

I live 10 minutes (by foot) from work, so I'm not stuffed on one of those sardine-can trains for an hour like Kamome... I can enjoy my breakfast while watching the fine entertainment known as Japanese soap operas.

I'm pretty sure it's NHK at 8:00am. I missed it this morning, but my wife said that Thane is telling Sakura's parents why he broke off the engagement.

Drama on video?

Postby GomiGirl » Fri Aug 09, 2002 3:18 pm

Do soaps ever go onto video/DVD as a set? :?:

They are great for Japanese practice - easy to follow and relatively uncomplicated Japanese. I have a few friends who have left Japan and these would make excellent stocking stuffers.

Looks like I missed that little petty witticism from cs. Got any other choice shreds of humor to share with us, Spanky?

How about "have a great vacation... and I'll have something witty to say when you get back in a couple of weeks".

BTW: where are you going?

Nice save......

I'm going somewhere hot and sunny in the Western Hemisphere, below the equator. :D
