Sangenjaya Samba Video

Postby GuyJean » Tue Aug 27, 2002 8:26 pm

Last Sunday, I went to the Sangenjaya (Sancha) Samba Festival, and digitally captured some of the sites.

http://www.TokyoDV.com/music/SanchaSamba.html

It's a large file (9.1MB), in Quicktime format. There's so much jigglin' and motion, I had to compress at a high data rate.

The compression is 'OK'. The scenes are nice, though. Lot's of families with small children and middle-aged men.. Oh, and some dancers.

One of my friends thought the video was a little "suggestive". I think it's tame enough.. Lot's of buns.. Oh! and Ms. Sangenjaya!

There's an even bigger festival planned for this weekend in Asakusa. Four thousand dancers, in different groups, competing for 6 million yen..

My God man- the crowd went wild! 8O

You can really see the ji-chans and ba-chans getting into it. Can you say PARTY TIME in SANGENJAYA.

Definitely the BRAZILIAN spirit touch them all.

Do I detect some sarcasm?

I think it's kind of funny how Japanese people watch something as an audience.. It's usually VERY difficult to see any reactions, facial expressions, etc.. I went to a Rage Against the Machine concert, and I didn't feel much crowd energy.

Kinda nice how you never know what to expect . I`ve seen crowds go off at Aphex twin and Iron Maiden, then a group that were practically comatose at a Bootsy Collins gig.

Bootsy was tearing the roof off the mother singing "we got the funk!" and most of the audience sure didnt get it(or have it). :?

Plus, have you ever noticed that Japanese club culture is as uniformas everything else? When people dance at the clubs, they all face the same direction (or stand in one big circle) and just dance the exact same way and jump at exactly the same time. It's still an energetic vibe, but it has that "planned" or "uninspired" feel that you see at so many Japanese public events.

That is the same as club culture everywhere. Trust me I have been to enough clubs, raves etc in many countries to be able to offer an unbiased sample. :hehe:

Great camera work... did you create a separate sequence to do the time slowing near the end of the video, or is that something you get for free in After Effects? :?:

I know! I always wonder if I'm missing something.. Like, am I supposed to be watching the DJ? I'm glad it's not just me that feels a little out of place when I face the 'wrong' way when I dance.

Hey, thanks! No AE in this clip. Just your basic FCP session of cutting, ripping and stretching. I'm a razor blade and fit to fill dude..

Totally noticed this, but have to agree with Gomi Girl , it goes on in clubs everywhere.

But my personal favourite...... dancing with your mirror image! Nothing better than a room full of people dancing with thier reflections. Like they havent spent enough time checking themselves out and doing thier makeup on the train

My personal fave is the kids who dance to their own reflections in shop windows after they have closed for the night. Especially near train stations. They bring their own stereos and everything for a "night out". What is that???

I guess it beats paying cover charge at a club or trying to get fake ID's.

How about that organized group hip-hop dancing in front of stores after they have closed? I often see a group of five or six kids practicing synchronized dance moves together in the evenings. What is that?
