Kyodo via Crisscross: Publisher ordered to pay damages to actress Hirosue for defamation
The Tokyo District Court ordered publisher Kodansha Ltd. on Friday to pay 4.4 million yen to actress Ryoko Hirosue for defaming her in a magazine article portraying her as a neglectful mother. The article carried in the May 7-14 2005 edition of the Shukan Gendai weekly magazine could give readers the impression Hirosue neglects her child and drinks heavily at host bars.

Mainichi: Actress Hirosue wins defamation suit against woman's weekly publisher

Actress Ryoko Hirosue was awarded 1.2 million yen in damages after the Tokyo District Court ruled a story in Josei Seven women's weekly magazine defamed her by implying she was involved in an extramarital affair. "The article implied that Hirosue was involved in an immoral relationship and caused her social standing to decline. There is a high possibility that the article was not factual and it was reported without sufficient proof," Presiding Judge Noriaki Sudo said as he handed down the ruling. Shogakukan, the publisher of Josei Seven and the defendant in the civil suit, said the company was considering its options. "We'll look closely at the verdict and decide what to do from now on," a company spokesman said. Hirosue sued Shogakukan after Josei Seven ran a story in March last year under the headline "Ryoko Hirosue can't divorce, gets ride on back of ex-boyfriend's bike.' She had sought about 24 million yen in compensation in the case, but the court awarded her 1.2 million yen.

Shogakukan, publishers of Josei Seven, took their case to the High Court following their loss in the Tokyo District Court. Again, however, judges have ruled in favour of Hirosue and increased the damage award from 1.2 million to 2.3 million yen. The publisher will study the new verdict before considering their next move.
