Asahi: Osaka's all-girl Oreskaband picked for Hollywood movie set in Japan
It seems like a dream come true for these six teenage girls. Oreskaband, an all-girl Japanese ska band whose members have all just graduated from their high schools, is set to star in a major Hollywood production. It is the first Japanese band to be picked for a full-length feature film--not counting the hit U.S. animation series "Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi," which features the Japanese pop duo Puffy... The film's musical story centers on an American student in Japan who hears the sextet performing at a live music venue in Sakai. The music talks, and the girls soon become friends. After the American girl returns home, her Japanese band friends come to visit her and play a few gigs. They are soon a huge hit, and their musical careers are set...They began performing in live venues in Tokyo and Osaka and did a rollicking show at last year's Fuji Rock Festival. In March, they performed in Austin, Texas, at the SXSW music showcase, in Los Angeles and in San Francisco during their first U.S. tour...more...

Their stage performance looks a bit more lively than their videos. This amateur clip from SXSW:

Don't mention the 2005 film "Linda Linda Linda":

Getting a bit cluttered with videos up there but the 2004 film "Swing Girls" also featured a schoolgirl band. Here they are performing live:

That's to take nothing away from Oreskaband but it the success of the two films might explain why Hollywood decided to pick up the theme.

As an aside, it looks a YouTube user has uploaded Swing Girls in its entirety, although you have to join their channel to see the other 12 parts:
