Dragon Ball Z the movie

Postby Buraku » Wed Dec 19, 2007 9:09 pm

The cast of "Dragon Ball Z" started to unveil one by one. After Emmy Rossum was announced as one of cast member earlier this week on December 16, Hollywood Reporter reported that Chow Yun-Fat will be the latest star addition to the action fantasy movie's cast.

I wonder why Hollywood keeps using the same actors...dont take it the wrong way...but I mean...What's up with the japanese actors?

I read in another thread that most asians known (or registered to work) in Hollywood are either chinese and Korean descent...

Just wondering?

One of the problems is lot of Japanese actors aren't very competent in English, many of them working in Japan don't try to break out of the mold and work in a foreign market.
Beat Takeshi, Youki Kudoh, Toshiro Mifune (dead) and Hiroyuki Sanada are some of the few actors that tried to break out into international markets
Mifune never bothered to learn English, for his lines he would simply remember the dialogue phonetically and then try to act the part

I don't know about Takeshi or Kudo, but many years ago, I did a year long TV series with Mifune Toshiro and he handled English pretty well. They do have broken english parts for some people to do, which may be your reference. Also, we hired Sanada for two years for a PR series
and where he wasn't great, he still wasn't too bad in English, although heavily accented.

It's a real shame that the creator of the series, Toriyama Akira, sold out with this movie deal.

I havent really read or watched Dragon ball but through living in Japan and teaching kids its impossible not to know a bit about it...so...what THE FUCK was that?
Ignoring the fact that none of them are asian, I thought that manga was set in space or at least a different plant with loads of aliens and shaz. That trailer looked like it was set in a highschool and directed by a retard whod bummed a copy of `fast and the furious - tokyo megablast`. Whats the point?

You are thinking of Dragon Ball Z. This movie is based more on the pre-Z era (Vegeta, Freeza, Cell, etc) and it appears like Piccolo is the main antagonist.

If I lost you, don't worry. DB was huge when I was a kid.

I've never seen a full episode of this series, but it's popularity has always made me wonder if I'm missing something. For those of you who know the show, would you recommend it to someone who wasn't really into anime? Also, is there like a single movie that pretty much sums up the entire story or would I have to watch a bunch of episodes?

I watched one of the movies once, a long time ago... It was okay, but nothing I'd intentionally go out an watch again.
The series on the other hand makes me cringe, and never actually sat through a full episode.

For me, visually (though I can't comment on the story, though I'm assuming it's at that level too) it resembles one of those crappy cartoons that were taken from an arcade fighting game, given a crappy story and evolved from there... Except this is the reverse.

In the games that came afterwards, they were much better.
