[floatr]Image[/floatr]Yomiuri: Shufu no Tomo women's mag to be discontinued
The long-established women's magazine "Shufu no Tomo" (Homemakers' Friend) will stop publication after its June issue, ending its 91-year history due to declining circulation and diversifying readership and lifestyles. Since first being published in February 1917, the monthly magazine has provided information for daily life and cultural pieces, gaining popularity as one of the four major women's periodicals in the nation. Shufu no Tomo was the last such magazine to remain on the market after the other three discontinued publishing one after another in the 1980s and '90s. The magazine has also been on the leading edge of Japanese women's lifestyle topics, with a wide range of contents, and was quick to feature such issues as women's participation in society and their right to vote in the Taisho era (1912-1926).

I think you're referring to "threading." It appears to have originated in India, according to the authoritative websites of random strangers on the internet.
