The Road To The Deep East: Amazon Panic
Since it started its branch in 2000, Amazon.com is now becoming an indispensable part of Internet life in Japan. When it was opened, it was just selling books , but now it is dealing in CDs, DVDs including adult ones, electric appliances, clothes, and amazingly, sex toys. Its annual sales was over 150 billion yens in 2007. As far as I can remember, Amazon is one of the most succeeded foreign company in Japan. However, one of the function of Amazon, which can not be thought of by any other Japanese companies but foreign capital like Amazon, is now raising a huge controversy. It is what is called 'wish list.' When it was introduced in Japan first, it was just written in katakana, 'ウィッシュリスト', so, many users could not understand what the function exactly means directly. Recently it was remodeled as '欲しいものリスト', (hoshii mono list) in Japanese, and many Japanese users noticed at this function and began to use this list to take a note of what he or she wants.

However, there was a critical mistake in this point...more...

This whole "scandal" is the result of a couple of bloggers trying to make big news over people not reading the terms of service and instructions on the Amazon wishlist into somehow being the fault of Amazon.co.jp. It's ridiculous. The summation of the arguements saying it is Amazon's fault are thus:

"I didn't read the terms of service which are posted right there on the wishlist page before creating a wish list filled with all sorts of porn and vibrators using my real name, and now I think it's Amazon's fault"

The wishlists are/were made public by default, but you don't have a wishlist by default. You actually have to go through and create one. If they didn't understand what the service was because the name was just "wishlist" in katakana, then they should have read the terms of service.

From the amazon.co.jp wishlist/hoshimonorisuto page:
