Norwegian Wood Film Version Scheduled

[floatr][/floatr]A press release (Japanese) reveals that Fuji Televison and Asmik-Ace will produce a film of Haruki Murakami's book "Norwegian Wood". No cast members have yet been announced but the director will be Vietnamese-born Anh Hung Tran who helmed "The Scent of Green Papaya". Filming will start next February and it should be released in 2010. Tran met Murakami as long ago as 2004 but final consent from the author only came in April. The book, which came out in 1987, made Murakami's reputation in Japan where over 8.7 million copies of the book have been printed to date. It is also widely read overseas and has been translated into 36 languages.

Thats cool. I dig Murakami. Im re-reading "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" right now. I havent read "Norwegian Wood" mostly cuz i dont really like the Beatles. I guess i will have to get over it so I can be prepared to poo-poo the movie when I see it.

I dont hate the beatles just kinda sick of em since it seems theyve been the background music for my life (usually in shopping malls in muzak form). However, if Toru is in the book even momentarily i will probably pick it up fairly soon.

I feel kinda disillusioned to see I have something in common with mr. takeashit or havetopoo or whatever his name is and will avoid the titles he mentioned like the crap on my thumb when i wipe in haste.

To understand his writing you need to be aware of what he believes is the mystical power of certain music, which is a common theme in much of his literature. Obviously, there's a reason for the title of the book. There's a spiritual connection between the song and the book because the ambiance of the song reverberates and even amplifies through the pages.
