[floatl][/floatl]Police have arrested Takayoshi Manda, a member of a gang thought to be linked to the Yamaguchi gumi, on suspicion of extorting money from Filipina actress Ruby Moreno. Moreno first came to the attention of Japanese audiences in the early nineties, winning the Mainichi Film Concours Best Actress award for "All Under the Moon". At the time, she was one of the few performers from South East Asia who regularly acted in Japanese and so she also began to appear regularly on television variety shows. It came to light, however, that she had originally worked as a hostess at a Philippine club and may have misrepresented herself on her visa application. She held a press conference at the time admitting to her past and work began to dry up, not helped by a slump in the film business at the time. She returned to club work and that served to keep her further away from the limelight while contributing to her recent troubles. Manda ran the Philippine pub she was working at most recently. When he heard that she planned to quit, he demanded one million yen from her in compensation and threatened her family if she refused. Police have arrested three men on suspicion of extortion.
I hate to say this, but my guess is that this might not be over and might end badly for Moreno. The yakuza have every interest in making her pay 'the hard way' also as a means to threaten others who might think of going to the police.
Hmmm, that's in my jurisdiction. I think I'll dash over there this evening and see if she'll slip me a mickey!
