Mrs. Catone and I took in the Baz Luhrmann pic last weekend, and I gots to say, it was pretty good. No baby-eating dingos, alas, and Nicole Kidman doesn't really do much for me, but apart from her the cast was great, the scenery was spectacular, and, as a bonus in the third act: "Japs"! And they were pure plot-device-driven predators, elemental killing machines, none of that flaccid, they're-somebody's-son-too crap you see in movies like The Thin Red Line. And the J-word was used so liberally it was hard to suppress an infantile snicker and glance at the stone-faced audience members. Needless to say, the Japanese captions read, "Japanese army."

I was looking forward to seeing it in the cinema, but it had a really limited release, at least in Kansai. There was just one cinema that was screening it.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

A bit off topic but does anyone know what derogatory word(s) the J people used to call their enemies in WWII?

If you're seriously interested in this topic, might I recommend the book War without Mercy: Race and Power in the Pacific War by John W. Dower. I read it about a year ago and found it to be an even-handed look at how each side demonized and underestimated the other. I don't remember the specific details about which you are asking and unfortunately don't have the time at the moment to scan through it.

"Demons" as I recall from reading the book Gilligan mentioned.
And SJ, what you heard is right, it's a massive steamy pile of shit.
